FACEBOOK has announced a privacy update that will allow users to keep copies of their own personal data.

Facebook expanded the types of information its approximately 845 million members could download from their personal account histories to include data such as friend requests and IP addresses of computers used to log-in.

"Starting today, you will be able to download an expanded archive of your Facebook account history," the Facebook Privacy Page said.

"Download Your Information lets you get a copy of what you've shared on Facebook, such as photos. Now you can access additional categories of information, including previous names, friend requests you've made and IP addresses you logged in from.

"This feature will be rolling out gradually to all users and more categories of information will be available for download in the future. Download Your Information is available from your Facebook Account Settings."

The move comes as the California-based internet star works to reassure regulators, members and advocacy groups concerned about how much privacy and control of personal information people have at Facebook.

The "Download Your Information" tool was launched in 2010 to allow Facebook members to keep copies of what they share with friends at the social network.

Facebook is expected to make a much-anticipated debut next month on the technology-heavy NASDAQ exchange. Facebook in February filed to go public and could raise as much as $US10 billion in the largest flotation ever by an Internet company on Wall Street.

The social network purchased photo-sharing app Instagram for $US1billion earlier this week, which experts believe would make it easier for marketers and advertisers to access your information.

Instagram contains information about users? image locations, places they visit and other social networks - which could be worth up to $4900 per person per year to marketers.
