AUSSIE actor Guy Pearce has issued a contrite apology to Canberra after mocking the city on US talk show.

Appearing on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, he said that pop star Kylie Minogue would hate him for saying she was from Canberra, that "there's a lot wrong about Canberra" and "people from Canberra usually deny they are from Canberra".

But Pearce conceded today that he had been "a d***head."

In a letter to The Canberra Times newspaper, the Hollywood star wrote, "I'm writing to sincerely apologise for the comments I recently made ... I'm such a twit for doing this and feel so embarrassed and mortified at what I said.

"I regretted it as soon as I walked off the set. I stupidly ran with a joke which I took too far for no other reason than to get laughs and I know I've offended many Canberrans and Australians in general."

The anti-Canberra topic of the show began when Ferguson asked two audience members where they were from and one revealed she hailed from the city, to which Ferguson replied, "Here's the thing I know about Canberra. Even Australians, die-hard patriots of the lucky country, say Canberra is a [censored] dump."

Pearce, who was raised in the southern city of Melbourne and has starred in films such as L.A. Confidential and The Hurt Locker, added in his letter, "The thing is, what I said doesn't even reflect my true feelings. I actually really like Canberra ... so I'm so sorry for being such a d***head.

"I have no excuse for doing what I did. I'm so proud of Australia ... Please accept my apology. I give you permission to abuse me in the street and tell me my films are crap."
