Seal scars: Didn't he get bitten by a wolf?

THERE are two mysteries surrounding Seal, and neither involves his flirty relationship with fellow judge on The Voice, Delta Goodrem.

One, why do fans find his eyes so dreamy?

And two, how did he get the scars on his face?

The unusual half-moon markings on the Grammy award-winning singer's cheeks have been the subject of intense internet speculation.

They look like the result of a knife fight gone wrong; and the fact that Seal grew up poor in London, unwanted by his Nigerian parents, lends that particular theory credibility.

But London street crime didn't leave its mark on Seal's face. Nor did ritual scarification.

"People want the scars to be tribal scars. That's just the nature of the media and of people's imaginations," the singer once told Jet magazine.

Other theories include: he was punched in the face while wearing glasses, he was in a motorcycle accident and, bizarrely, he was bitten on the face by a wolf.

The real cause of the scars is less exciting than a nasty encounter with a furry predator but still just as painful.

Seal (real name Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel) suffers from discoid lupus erythematosus, a rare form of lupus that leaves thick, scaly lesions on the patient's skin.

The spray of scars on Seal's face didn't appear until he was 23, although it isn't known when the auto-immune disease, which is incurable, developed.

In an interview with the New York Times in 1996, Seal revealed that he channelled his pain through his lyrics.

"I believe that in all forms of art there has to have been some initial adversity: that is what makes art, as far as I'm concerned," he said. "And it's not something you outlive: once you experience it, it's always with you. It forms part of your makeup; probably it's the reason for your makeup."

That pain and vulnerability, which fans say they can see in his eyes, probably clears up the first mystery (the word women use around the singer is swoon).

As for Delta, Seal's publicist dismissed the rumours that the newly single stars had hooked up, fuelled by their passionate kiss on the Logies red carpet on Sunday.

They are "just co-judges, friends", the publicist said.
