WANT to make earn yourself more Facebook friends? Get your nose out of a book and start listening to music.

So says the result of a study that showed people with a shared interest in music and films are more likely to befriend one another on Facebook, while being a book-worm left people forever alone.

A love of literature had almost no influence when it came to making online friends.

The Harvard study contradicted the popular notion that a successful relationship has more to with what you like than what you are like.

The results might cause concern for marketing professionals ? particularly those who have created Facebook applications that use peer recommendation advertisements.

?The extent to which friends? preferences actually rub off on each other is minimal,? said one of the researchers Kevin Lewis.

The study found that the tastes of Facebook friends had more to do with how they became friends in the first place, than the influence of their preferences on each other later on.

That is with the exception of classical and jazz music. People who shared a preference for the two genres tended to have more influence on each other than those who didn?t.

The sociologists tracked the activities, friendships and tastes of college students over four years.

The study found that gender, race and socioeconomic similarities tended to govern relationships and that people tended to befriend people that are like them.
