Siri vs Evi: The battle to be your phone's voice

  • Evi - the new voice activated personal assistant
  • Works on iPhones and Android smartphones
  • App is said to know about a billion facts

A NEW voice activated personal assistant for smartphones is set to give Apple's "Siri" a run for its money.

?Evi? is an artificial intelligence voice-activated tool for iPhone and Android smartphones - not just the 4S.

According to US-based developers True Knowledge - Evi is really, really smart.

?Evi knows about a billion facts and is built to adapt to you and your world. The more questions you ask her, the smarter she becomes,? the True Knowledge website says.

Evi can also turn speech into text so the app works for both hearing and non-hearing people.

Users can ask Evi questions out loud or type in the text according to their preference, whereas Siri only responds to spoken requests.

The app also reportedly tries to understand user?s intentions so it can provide increasingly relevant answers.

Reports say the results can be imperfect but improves over time the more you use it, despite only being in Beta testing phase.

Evi also creates ?word maps? of user?s most common requests, words or phrases so users can ask questions just by tapping the words on the screen.

However, unlike Siri, Evi cannot add things to your iTunes calendar for or hook into reminders. But True Knowledge said it?s only a matter of time.

News.com.au put Evi to the test and found the personal assistant needed a lot of time to give answers. When asked what day it was, what the weather is like and who the Prime Minister of Australia was, Evi replied eventually and came up with the answer.

To be fair Evi was having server problems at the time of testing.
