Police save woman from death on train tracks

  • Woman drives onto train tracks, gets stuck
  • Police drag her from the car before train hits
  • Police arrest the woman for DUI

POLICE on Long Island pulled a woman from a car stuck on tracks just moments before a train slammed into the vehicle.

The woman was driving a Volkswagen Jetta south on Brentwood Road at 5pmlocal time yesterday when she mistakenly turned onto the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) tracks in Bay Shore, Suffolk County police said.

The car got stuck, and she unsuccessfully tried to dislodge the car.

Officers Christopher Palazzo and Jereme Matthews arrived at the scene, called dispatch to stop the train and cleared people from the area, police said.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said the train was too close to stop, so the officers pulled the woman out of her car, and the three of them ran from the tracks just as the train crashed into the car, police said.

Although the car went flying across the tracks, no one was hurt on the ground or in the train, police said.

Police then arrested the driver of the Jetta for driving under the influence, authorities said.
