ANGRY that their son tied the knot with a woman who had been married previously, an Indian family tortured the 18-year-old bride, then paraded her semi-naked through the streets.
The teen, who was taken to hospital today after police found out about the incident, was summoned by her father-in-law last night to his home near Rampurhat, 140 miles (225km) north of Kolkata, just days after she had married his son, The Times of India said.
When she arrived, she was allegedly attacked by her in-laws, before having several items of clothing stripped from her body and being paraded through the village. It was reported that the family was angered by the fact the girl had been married before.
"We came to know about the incident (today) and immediately sent a police force to [the village]," Rampurhat Sub Divisional Officer Baivab Sribastav told The Times.
"Our officers spoke to the girl. She told them she was tortured, her hair was snipped and she was forced to walk in a semi-naked condition across the village. One person has been detained for interrogation. But what exactly happened is yet to be investigated. We will provide security for her family members if they seek it."
