BOOKIES have Gotye's smash hit Somebody That I Used To Know as the shortest priced favourite ever to top Triple J's Hottest 100.
The traditional Australia Day countdown of the year's most popular alternative songs attracts millions of votes from around the world.
Somebody That I Used To Know, which hit No.1 on the Australian charts for several weeks in 2011 is now soaring to the top spot throughout Europe and is set to become a huge hit in America.
Fellow ARIA award winners Boy and Bear are in the running to make the top 10 with their breakthrough song Feeding Line while another star of 2011, rapper Drapht should rank highly with his infectious tune Bali Party.
Sportingbet Australia's Tony Wilmot said the song was the shortest priced favourite since he started doing the prices in 2005.
"The song has been a huge hit both on Triple J and mainstream radio and there's no way I can see it being beaten," said Wilmot.
"If it gets knocked off it would be as bigger upset as if Black Caviar was to be beaten on Friday night."
Wilmot said there was a couple of songs that had attracted some money at longer odds.
"Former Idol contestant Matt Corby's song Brother has been backed in from $67 to $14 and some punters stand to win four figure sums if it can snatch top spot," Wilmot said.
"Lonely Boy by the The Black Keys and Video Games by Lana Del Rey have also attracted some longer odds support at $41 and $51 respectively."
Academics share secrets of the countdown
La Trobe University senior lecturer in economics Liam Lenten and co-author Dr Jordi McKenzie from the University of Sydney have analysed all songs that have ever made a Triple J's Hottest 100 countdown.
Findings from previous years include that song titles beginning with A, B and C are over-represented, apparently due to the way the online voting system has been set up. Australian artists are also favoured.
"I was a fan of the countdown and triple j for years and I always wondered about the intricacies of why it is some songs and some artists have some kind of subtle edge over others," Lenten said.
"I used to joke that Powderfinger could release a four-minute audio track of two dogs barking and it would still make the Hottest 100."
