BORING, tame and restrained was how critics described it. For Ricky Gervais it was "pitch-perfect".

Despite promising not to hold back during his third Golden Globes hosting gig, Gervais failed to outrage with the general critical reaction wondering why he bothered.

"After weeks of media speculation about what Gervais would do, Gervais' performance as host was decidedly anti-climactic and underwhelming," wrote The Huffington Post?s Maureen Ryan. "Its general mediocrity gave the ceremony as a whole a certain deflated quality."

The LA Times rated his performance as "markedly respectful" compared to last year, "leaving one to wonder why he bothered to take the gig at all (except for the money, of course)."

The Washington Post agreed he was "harmless" and said "the best Gervais could do this year was toss off a few jokes about the fact that he might make some unacceptable remarks. Which he never really did."

Gervais told Deadline.com magazine that 2012's gig had gone "much better" than the previous two years.

"The crowd was with me this time," he said at the HBO afterparty.

"They went where I went. It?s like they were ready for me this time and it felt pitch-perfect."

But the British comic confirmed he would not be back next year saying he had done enough.

"No I?m really done this time,? he said. ?Three is plenty - at least that?s what Charlie Sheen told me."

While most were critical of his performance, there was some praise - including from NBC, who he took aim at during his opening speech.

"I think he scored,? NBN?s executive in charge of the Globes telecast Paul Telegdy told Deadline.com.

"I believe people were prepared after last year, but I would say that he was as disruptive and intrusive this year. I can't see how he could have been more outrageous."

Man of the moment George Clooney also said he got a laugh out of the funnyman.

"I think he handled tonight like a proper good host again,? Clooney said. ?I think people were expecting a lot of trash talk, and he did a little bit of that, and he made me laugh. He was very funny."
