- Russell Brand filed for divorce last week
- Reports couple split over baby disagreement
- Sources said Brand wanted child, Perry did not yet
RUSSELL Brand filed for divorce from Katy Perry after just 14 months of marriage because they disagreed over having a baby, the Sunday Mirror reported, citing sources close to the former couple.
Brand, a reformed heroin addict and now teetotaler, had made it no secret that he wanted to have children with Perry, telling "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" last month, "I would like one [a baby]. I love those little babies in the beginning."
While Perry, 27, told talk show host DeGeneres a month earlier that she would "love to have children" with Brand, 36, her constant partying and refusal to settle down led to a series of arguments between them in the lead-up to their marriage breakdown, as she did not want to become a "Hollywood housewife," sources told the newspaper.
The "Firework" singer married the British star in India on October 23, 2010. Rumors were rife over the past six months that their relationship was on the rocks, with Brand regularly seen out without his wedding ring.
Due to hectic work schedules, they also spent little time together during their marriage, and by October 2011, rumors swirled that the two were splitting up - which the couple vehemently denied.
But the rumor mill reached fever pitch last week when it was discovered that the pair celebrated the Christmas holiday separately. Perry was photographed frolicking on the beach in Hawaii, while Brand spent the holiday in England. Neither wore their wedding rings.
A week before Christmas, Perry reportedly took off her ring and gave it to Brand after a huge argument in a bid to call his bluff. But the bid backfired - Brand saw it as the final straw and the end of their marriage, sources told the Sunday Mirror.
Brand filed divorce papers in Los Angeles on Friday, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the cause of the breakup.
"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage," he said in a statement. "I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."
Perry reportedly asked Brand to file the divorce to avoid upsetting her parents, who are Christian pastors. She did not want to be the one who "officially" ended the marriage, TMZ reported Saturday, citing unnamed sources.
