Fabio Capello: Was particularly impressed by Jack Rodwell against Spain
England coach Fabio Capello hailed the performance of his younger players following the 1-0 victory over Spain at Wembley.
A second-half header from Frank Lampard was enough for England against the world champions, although they were under pressure for much of the game and starved of possession for large periods.
A solid defensive display limited the Spaniards to only a few late chances though, with Cesc Fabregas spurning a glorious opportunity from close range.
Capello was particularly impressed with the performance of Jack Rodwell, who was introduced in the 56th minute, whilst also singling out Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Kyle Walker.
Capello said: "The most important thing that I saw this evening was the performance of Rodwell, the performance of Jones, the performance of Welbeck. Really good young players. Also Walker when he played, he was immediately in the game.
"I think these players will be really important for the Euros. They played without fear, with personality on the pitch and physically and technically I can see they are good to play with the seniors."
He continued: "We needed to be focusing in every moment of the game and win the ball back wherever possible.
"Playing against Spain is a really difficult game because the quality of their players is fantastic. But the most difficult thing when you play against this team is that they press the ball.
"I think it's important for the squad to find confidence, it is important for the crowd, for the fans, to beat the champions of the world."
Defensive praise
Capello was similarly praising of England's two centre-halves, Joleon Lescott and Phil Jagielka, while he described Scott Parker's midfield performance as 'incredible'.
"I think the two centre-backs played a fantastic game, really good," the Italian said. "Every time the Spanish tried passes through they were in good positions.
"They played with big, big confidence. If you play without confidence against Spain it is impossible to get a good result."
England face Sweden in another friendly on Tuesday, and Capello confirmed that John Terry would return to the starting line-up.
He also revealed that Gary Cahill, Daniel Sturridge and Walker would all play a part against the Scandinavians.
