Ex-Sesame Street composer on child porn charges

A FORMER music composer for the long-running children's show "Sesame Street" was under house arrest in South Carolina today after pleading not guilty to child pornography charges.

Fernando Rivas, 59, is charged with production, transportation and possession of child pornography, The Post and Courier reported.

He entered his plea in USfederal court yesterday in Charleston, South Carolina.

Investigators were led to Rivas by another child porn investigation in New Jersey. Police and FBI agents raided Rivas' home in April and found photographs of a naked four-year-old girl "restrained in handcuffs and other bondage-type devices," court records said.

At the time of his arrest, Rivas admitted to taking the photos and sending them to two other people via email.

Rivas wrote songs for Sesame Street - including the album Elmopalooza, for which he won a Grammy Award in 1998 - as well as the Disney Channel's animated series Handy Manny and a stage musical about murdered Mexican-American singing star Selena.

He posted 10 per cent of his $300,000 bond yesterday and was put on house arrest with electronic monitoring by US Magistrate Judge Bristow Marchant.

He was forbidden from accessing the internet or interacting with children except in the presence of an adult who is aware of the charges against him.
