Mick McCarthy: The Wolves boss knows the meeting with Sunderland could not be bigger

Sky Bet

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy is well aware of the magnitude of next Sunday's meeting with former club Sunderland.

The Molinuex club sit just outside the Premier League relegation zone after a weekend defeat at Chelsea ensured they have still won just three matches this season.

Sunderland sit level with Wolves on 11 points and boss Steve Bruce is reportedly facing the sack after a wretched run of form.

As a result, McCarthy, who was in charge at the Stadium of Light between 2003 and 2006, knows the coming fixture holds huge significance in the fight to avoid relegation.

"I don't think it could be any bigger," he told Wolves' official website.

"I'm not sure anybody thought we could come and win at Chelsea. It's how we lost that is really disappointing - being 3-0 down by half time. We never gave ourselves a chance of winning it.

Ridiculous

"It was always going to be huge. If this is going to make it any bigger then so be it.

"What's the point in looking beyond that - we've got Man United away the week afterwards? Let's deal with Sunderland."

Kevin Doyle and Richard Stearman both missed the defeat at Chelsea due to injury, while Jamie O'Hara and Stephen Hunt were suspended.

McCarthy hopes to welcome back all of the quartet for the match against Sunderland, but he will be missing Karl Henry after the midfielder collected a fifth booking of the season at Stamford Bridge.

"I'd like everyone back fit and available - we want Jamie and everyone else back as well," said the Wolves boss.

"Although we've lost Karl Henry now to what was the most ridiculous booking. He won the ball and it was a really poor booking, but that's the way things are going at the minute."
