Aston Villa sealed their place in the NextGen quarter-finals after a 3-0 win over Ajax at Villa Park, courtesy of a hat-trick from skipper Gary Gardner.
Villa Park played host to the final NextGen Series Group game. The two teams occupied the top two spots in Group 3, with Ajax starting the game only one point ahead with a game in hand.
Both sides started in confident fashion, using possession well to make space for some early chances.
The breakthrough came on 26 minutes with Villa talisman Gary Gardner, fresh from his travels with the England Under-21 squad, heading a neat cross from Samir Carruthers into the far corner to make it 1-0.
After the break, it only took Gardner ten minutes to double the claret and blues advantage with a clever free kick that went under the Ajax wall and into the back of the net.
Ajax didn't seem to have enough quality on the night to threaten the Villa defence, and it was Gardner who punished them again on 83 minutes, completing a marvellous display and bagging himself a hat-trick, as he curled in a shot from the edge of the box past the helpless Nicky Van der Hart to make it 3-0 and give his side a well deserved three points.
The victory leaves Villa at the top of Group 3, but if Ajax get a win in Norway next week against Rosenborg BK, they will finish Group winners and leave the British side runners up.
