REMEMBER this? If you still have one, then Apple wants to give you a new one. For free.

Why? Because of fears the battery in the first generation iPod nano - the music player that let you hold 1000 songs in your pocket - could overheat and catch fire.

Apple said the issue had been "traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages."

The iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006 but how do you know if your nano is explosive? Apple has kindly thought of that, too, possibly to cut down on the number of new nanos it has to hand over.

"It has black or white plastic on the front and a silver metal back - later iPod nano models have a metal front and back," Apple says.

The replacement offer could end up costing Apple millions of dollars.

The guardian.co.uk reports that between September 2005 and December 2006 Apple sold more than 60 million iPods, although it's not known how many nanos it sold.

The first generation nano was hailed revolutionary at the time. It was thinner than a pencil but the screen was small, it couldn't play videos and had a maximum of 4GB of storage. It was also controlled by a click wheel.

If you still have one lying around, your upgrade is the size of a watch face, has a touch screen, can play video, has a maximum of 16GB of storage and shuffles your music library when you give it a shake.

Start rummaging through your drawers and wardrobes now.
