TWITTER announced today that it now has more than 100 million users.
The social networking site, which was founded in 2006, defined active users as people who log in at least once a month, but noted that over half that total use the service every day.
The company has previously said that over 200 million accounts have been created. By contrast, Facebook has 750 million active users.
In a blog post entitled "One hundred million voices," Twitter revealed that 40 per cent of its users don't tweet themselves, but simply use their accounts to follow the activities of other users.
The social networking service receives approximately 400 million browsers a month.
The company said 35 current heads of state use Twitter to communicate with their constituents, as well as countless athletes, entertainers, humanitarians and reporters.
The company noted that 87 per cent of Billboard's Top 100 musicians in 2010 are active users. Two-thirds of NBA players use the service and 99 per cent of America's top 200 non-profits have Twitter accounts.
Lady Gaga has the most Twitter followers with 13.3 million, followed by Justin Bieber with 12.4 million, and President Barack Obama with 9.9 million.
Back in February The Wall Street Journal reported that the company expected to post revenues of approximately $100 million this year.
The San Francisco-based firm has over 600 employees and generates more than 230 million tweets per day.
