EVERYBODY hurts. Today it's the turn of R.E.M fans.

After31 years and 15 albums the legendary grouphave "called it a day".

R.E.Mmade the announcement on their official website today ending a career that had produced seminal albums including Murmur, Reckoning, Out of Time, Green and Automatic For the People.

"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M, and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band," the band wrote.

"We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."

The bandsaid that during the recording of their last album the band had realised the songs seemed to "draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together".

"We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart. The time just feels right."

R.E.M's frontman Michael Stipe said the decision wasn't an easy one, but "a wise man once said - the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave".

"We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it."

Along with Stipe, the band for the majority of its tenure consisted of guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

"Losing my religion" and REM quickly became trending topics on social media as fans took to social media to wish the band members well and recall their favorite moments.

"I am so glad I got to see R.E.M live. Collapse Into Now is a great album. Ending on a high note," Twitter user Heather Murray wrote.

"R.E.M wrote a big part of the soundtrack of my high school life," Twitter user Mardou Ledger wrote.

The band released what will now be their final album, Collapse Into Now, in March of this year.

Rolling Stone reports there had been some speculation R.E.M had spent time over summer in an Athens recording studio sparking hopes for another album.
