Rose: Shot a final round 71 to win by two strokes
Justin Rose survived a final round wobble to score a two-shot win over John Senden in the BMW Championship in Illinois.
Rose's victory at Cog Hill, achieved via a closing level par 71 for a winning total of 13-under, vaulted him to third place in the FedEx Cup standings and in a great position to have a run at the $10m jackpot on offer at next week's closing playoff event - the Tour Championship at East Lake.
The 31-year-old started the final round with a four-shot lead but a bogey at the par-three second saw his advantage trimmed to three.
However, with the pack unable to mount a charge, birdies on the sixth and seventh saw Rose pull five shots clear as he walked to the ninth tee, a par five.
Rose made a mess of it though, racking up a bogey six, and with Senden making birdie at the same hole the Englishman's lead was cut to three.
He also took six on the par five 15th after a wayward tee-shot which flew into the trees and at that point his lead was just one shot.
The gap remained a single stroke after both players made par at 16 but Rose looked to have left the door open when his approach to the par four 17th came up short of the green.
Chipped in
Senden leaked his approach into a greenside bunker though and Rose cashed in as he chipped in for an unlikely birdie three which effectively won him the title.
Aussie Senden bravely saved par but he couldn't threaten the flag at 18 and holed out for par to leave the stage for Rose to claim his third PGA Tour win.
Rose, who had boomed his drive down the middle and found the centre of the green, cosied his birdie putt to a couple of inches and tapped in for a deserved victory.
Geoff Ogilvy, like Rose and Senden, had started the week outside the top 30 players who head to East Lake for the Tour Championship but made it through to Atlanta with a closing 69 which left him alone in third place.
World number one Luke Donald, who had been 12 shots adrift of first round leader Rose after day one - shooting a 75 to his fellow Englishman's 63 - closed with a 68 to claim solo fourth on eight-under, five shots back.
Webb Simpson finished fifth, a shot ahead of Camilo Villegas and Jason Dufner.
Ups and downs
"I had my ups and downs and the learning curve is steep sometimes," Rose told Sky Sports 3. "It was hard today, I took on a couple of crazy shots and had to have a quiet word with myself."
As for the chip on the 17th, he added: "I nearly took the chicken stick out and putted it but I said to myself it was a makeable chip so I had to commit."
