- Nike releases line of Air Mag sneakers
- 1500 pairs of shoes auctioned on eBay
- All proceeds go to Michael J. Fox foundation
THE future is finally here.
Back To The Future fans are reeling after news that Nike is releasing a line of Nike Air Mags ? the shoes that Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, wore in the film that set unrealistic expectations about the state of hoverboard development in 2015.
Nike CEO Mike Parker announced that 1500 pairs of the shoes are available for auction on eBay, shoe blog Nice Kicks reported yesterday.
All proceeds of the auction go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation which supports Parkinson?s research.
This teaser video was releasedon a YouTube account under the name of DocEmmetBrown88 in the description it reads: "If I didn't know any better, I'd say that looks like shelves and shelves of 2011 Nike MAG shoes."
Fox himself was to appear on the David Letterman show at 11.30pm today (4.30pm AEST), about the same time Nike hosted an event to launch the shoe line.
Nice Kicks broke the news last night after receiving a late night invite to Mike's ?It?s About Time? event in Los Angeles where a ?big announcement? would be made.
The invitation came complete with a box of goodies that included an iPod Shuffle with a message in thevoice ofDr Emmett Brown (the character played by Christopher Lloyd in the film) saying: ?Welcome to Los Angeles. If my calculations are correct, over the next 24 hours you are about to see some SERIOUS S**T!?
The pack also included a Back to the Future DVD, a pair of metal shield glasses, popular 1980s candy and "Throwback Pepsi" ? made using the formula from 1985.
The internet has long suspected that Nike has been workingon bringing the Nike Air Mags to market after news broke last year that the company had applied for a patentfor the shoes in 2009.
One fan who has been working on her own line of Back to the Future-inspired shoes for more than a year told news.com.au today she was pleased with this latest development.
Amateur science boffin Blake Bevin has been crowdsourcing the funds to bring her line of "Power Laces" to market and is happy the Nike versions are helping Parkinson's research.
?It turns out that the shoe Nike is releasing is a non-powered replica that will be sold to raise money for Parkinson's research, which is a charity I strongly believe in as my grandmother is a sufferer,? Ms Bevin said.
She said she suspects Nike is working on a version of auto-lacing fashion shoes but says her Power Laces offer something special.
?As my device is designed more for accessibility for the disabled, I believe that we can co-exist in the same market as we cater to different demographics."
