Young: Manchester United have been repeatedly linked with the England international

Sky Bet

Caretaker manager Gary McAllister insists Ashley Young was not waving goodbye to Aston Villa when he left the field against Liverpool.

The England international has been repeatedly linked with a move to Premier League champions Manchester United and he has just 12 months left on his contract.

Villa could consequently be forced to accept money for Young this summer, rather than risk losing him for free in one year.

And those present at Villa Park on the final day of the season could have been forgiven for thinking the 25-year-old was saying farewell as he applauded all sides of the ground when substituted during the 1-0 victory over the Reds.

But McAllister was adamant it was no such gesture, with the Scot saying: "I think people thought that was staged but his calf was screaming.

Speculation

"He wasn't coming off waving goodbye because we want to keep him.

"We have to keep trying and a couple of signings here or there might help.

"I am sure there is interest because there has been a lot of speculation around Ashley for a long time now.

"Until such a time that someone comes in with a bid which is acceptable to Aston Villa then he is still a Villa player because he has a year left on his contract.

"But there is no way of me predicting how clubs will do their business."
