MARIA Shriver allegedly confronted her husband's mistress over suspicions she was secretly raising his love child.

The mother of four, 55, is said to have asked her family's housekeeper, Mildred Baena, 50, if her son was fathered by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

During the dramatic showdown, Ms Baena broke down and confessed, according to Radar Online.

Schwarzenegger, 63, came clean about the affair only after Shriver told him she knew the truth about his 13-year secret, insiders said.

"Maria has suspected this for a long time and she asked the housekeeper," a source said.

"The housekeeper admitted it. Maria then went to Arnold and he confessed."

It was also reported Schwarzenegger showered Ms Baena's family with money during her time in their employ.

The Terminator star paid for a lavish party for the daughter of Mildred's sister Maria, who also worked for the Schwarzeneggers.

Other reports claimed Ms Baena was obsessed with Shriver and wanted to be just like her.

Sources claim the housekeeper would wear the former NBC presenter's clothes and jewellery and that after Shriver left for work in the morning Ms Baena would climb into bed with Schwarzenegger.

He is putting his acting career on hold as he battles with the fallout of his love child scandal.

This month he agreed to star in Cry Macho for a rumoured $12.5 million.

He was also in negotiations to star in a new film in the Terminator franchise.

The actor has asked his agent at CAA to cancel his current film negotiations.

A statement released yesterday read: "Governor Schwarzenegger is focusing on personal matters and is not willing to commit to any production schedules or timelines.

"This includes Cry Macho, the Terminator franchise and other projects under consideration. We will resume discussions when Governor Schwarzenegger decides."

Shriver and their four children are still grappling with the bombshell revelation.

His daughter, Katherine, 21, is taking solace in the words of a book of uplifting sayings.

The ex-governor's oldest child tweeted the phrase: "Everything happens for a reason, the hard part is finding out what that reason is," which comes from a book of quotes called The Notebook of Love.
