THE Federal Government should keep Sony's PlayStation Network offline until the company proves it can adequately protect customer privacy, a security expert says.

Sony this week began restoring the network that was shut down on April 20 after an attack which saw the personal information of more than 77 million people compromised.

An attack on another Sony database around the same time affected an additional 24 million accounts.

Australian gamers reported late yesterday they could log into the PlayStation Network and change their passwords.

However Sony's home country of Japan has blocked the restoration of the network until the company proves it has boosted security.

Professor Bill Caelli told The Australian that the Australian Government should also veto the network's operation until it had undertakings that security concerns had been addressed.

He said the public had "no way of assessing the assurances given by the owners of the system themselves".

Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim is among those around the world investigating the hacking incident.

Sony has admitted three data breaches.

The first breach was the hacking of 77 million PlayStation customer accounts and possibly credit card details.

The second involved the hacking of credit and debit card details of about 24.6 million Sony Online Entertainment accounts, of which 336 were from Australia.

The third involved details of customers who entered a product sweepstake.
