TWITTER users expressed outrage today after photo sharing service TwitPic changed its terms to allow it to sell their images.

The US-based website, which is used by millions, was forced to apologise and clarify its position after moving to claim the right to sell users' photos without their permission, UK daily the Metro reported.

With some users calling for a boycott, TwitPic founder Noah Everett posted a message saying sorry and again rewriting the terms and conditions relating to posted pictures.

"First off I want to apologise for that confusion and our lack of clarity. We've updated our terms again to be more clear and to also show that you still own your content," he wrote.

The terms still say that users of the site grant TwitPic a "worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free" and "transferable" license to use, reproduce and distribute their pictures.

The site also says it will store a copy of images which have been deleted, but not display or distribute them.

"You understand and agree, however, that Twitpic may retain, but not display, distribute, or perform, server copies of your media that have been removed or deleted," the terms say.

"The above licenses granted by you in user comments you submit are perpetual and irrevocable. Deleted images are only accessed in the event of a legal issue."

TwitPic is owned separately from Twitter but is designed specifically to help users of that website upload images.

It has signed a deal with news agency WENN for rights to distribute any posted images.
