John Lennon's killer moved after 30 years

JOHN Lennon's killer has been transferred from the jail he has been in for 30 years to another maximum security prison in upstate New York, correctional services confirmed.

Mark David Chapman was moved from the AtticaCorrectional Facility to the Wende Correctional Facility in Alden but officials declined to disclose the reasons for the transfer, WIVB-TV reported.

"He was in a special unit at Attica and he will be going to a protective custody unit at Wende. He's what we consider in our system a high-profile inmate," State Corrections director of communications Peter Cutler said.

Chapman pleaded guilty to fatally shooting Lennon outside the former Beatles' Manhattan apartment building in December 1980. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison at his 1981 trial and had been held at Attica ever since.

Chapman, now 57, was denied parole for a sixth time in September 2010 but is up for parole again in August.
