Nicolas Almagro: Retained his Nice Open title after straight sets win over Ben Baker
Nice Open champion Nicolas Almagro retained his title by beating Ben Baker in straight sets on Saturday.
Baker, the 27-year-old world number 216, had entered the tournament without a main tour win in seven years.
But the American has enjoyed a fairytale run this week, which included a three-set victory over former world number three Nikolay Davydenko.
But there was to be no happy ending for Baker as he went down to clay-court specialist Almagro 6-3 6-2.
Third seed Almagro, who has not dropped a set en route to defending his title, broke Baker in the seventh game and again in the ninth to take the first set.
Baker was broken twice more in the second set as Spanish ace Almagro wrapped up victory in 70 minutes.
