Jupp Heynckes: Bayern Munich rued missed chances after losing the Champions League final
Jupp Heynckes was left to reflect on too many missed chances after Bayern Munich were beaten on penalties by Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final.
Bayern were the dominant force on their own Allianz Arena turf, but were unable to take advantage of the numerous opportunities which came their way.
Arjen Robben struck the post in the first half, Mario Gomez missed a great chance and Franck Ribery had a goal disallowed before Thomas Muller finally headed home the opener with seven minutes left.
However, Didier Drogba equalised for Chelsea with two minutes to go before Robben saw an extra-time penalty saved by Petr Cech after Ribery had been tripped.
Substitute Ivica Olic then wasted a golden chance in the second period of extra-time before his spot-kick in the shoot-out was saved after Bayern had scored their first three penalties.
Bastian Schweinsteiger then saw his penalty tipped on to the post by Cech before Drogba stepped up to secure a thrilling victory for the Premier League club.
Heynckes was satisfied with Bayern's general performance, but conceded his team had been punished for the lack of a ruthless touch in front of goal.
Punished
"We missed too many chances," said Heynckes. "We played well overall and had the majority of possession.
"But we didn't know how to exploit our many opportunities and you have to use them or you will be punished."
Meanwhile, Heynckes has called on Roman Abramovich to give Roberto Di Matteo a three-year contract after Chelsea secured Champions League glory for the first time in their history.
He added: "I congratulate Chelsea on their victory.
"If you wish me to say something about Roberto Di Matteo it is that Chelsea should give him a three-year contract."
