A MAN admitted stealing the handbag and shoes of a grandmother who had just been killed in a horrific road crash in northwest England.
Sarwari Ashraf, 62, was struck by a truck on March 29 near Manchester, with the impact of the collision sending her handbag and shoes flying about 100 yards (meters) up the road.
Unemployed Marc Kirvin, of Altrincham, spotted the items as he was going past in a car and ran onto the road to grab them, the Manchester Evening News reported. The 46-year-old kept �1,600 ($A2,557) he found in the bag then threw the dead woman's belongings in a trash can.
He was eventually tracked down by police after they publicly released CCTV of the incident. He told officers he did not know about the accident and thought the handbag must have slipped off a car roof when someone forgot about it. He said he could not explain why he took Ashraf's shoes, or why he thought they were there.
Kirvin is facing a prison sentence after admitting theft at Manchester Magistrates Court yesterday.
The fact he threw away Ashraf's belongings meant her identity remained a mystery until her family became worried they could not contact her the next day and called police. Her traditional Muslim burial was delayed as a result.

In a statement, the family said, "Our family can't express in words the distress, anxiety and sadness that this offense has caused."
A 40-year-old truck driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.
