India ferry capsizes: 35 dead, 165 missing

A PACKED ferry boat has capsized in heavy winds and rain in remote northeastern India, leaving at least 35 people dead and 165 others feared missing, police say.

Assam state police chief JN Choudhury said the boat was carrying about 350 passengers and broke into two pieces today.

About 150 people who were travelling on the top level were rescued or swam to safety, he said. Details were sketchy because bad weather and the remoteness of the area hampered communication.

Choudhury said the accident occurred on the Brahmaputra river near Fakiragram in west Dhubri district. The area is about 350km west of the state capital, Gauhati, and close to where the river enters Bangladesh. He said officials in that country had been contacted for help.

The area is dotted with riverside settlements and small islands, and boats are the most common mode of transport. Most ferries are overcrowded, with little regard for safety regulations.

Strong winds and rain likely caused the accident, Choudhury said. Police and paramilitary soldiers were sent to help local villagers with rescue efforts, he said.

'Gossip Girl' Star Kelly Rutherford Sued -- You OWE Me $58k for Spying on Your Ex

Exclusive

0430_kelly_rutherford_getty
It costs $65-per-hour to spy on your ex-husband ... this according to a private eye who claims he spent months snooping around for "Gossip Girl" star Kelly Rutherford ... only to get stiffed when the bill came.

The divorce between Rutherford and her ex-husband Daniel Giersch was EPICALLY NASTY -- with restraining orders and allegations of child endangerment.

According to a lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, Rutherford hired a private eye to spy on her ex in April 2010 ... "in relation to certain issues regarding child custody and other matters."

The private eye, Edward Banach, claims he worked on the case for a couple of months ... racking up a total bill of $86,249.85 ... but only got paid $28,214.35.

Now, Banach -- who was sub-contracted through a now-defunct security company -- is suing the business AND Rutherford to get the remaining $58k.

FYI -- At the height of the legal war between Kelly and Giersch, the actress admitted she hired a P.I. ... to prove her ex didn't properly secure the pool and play areas at his home -- which she said endangered the couple's 2-year-old son Hermes.

Rutherford explained, "I was concerned about my son's safety."

We called Kelly for comment on this story -- so far, no response.

FORGET the Battle of the Besties - in the end it was buddy hell for The Voice favourite Mahalia Barnes.

In the first major shock for the smash-hit Channel 9 talent show, frontrunner Barnes was knocked out by long-time friend and Team Joel rival Prinnie Stevens.

Having gigged together for more than a decade, they were well acquainted with each other's strengths. But last night Stevens was given the edge after they sang Soft Cell's Tainted Love.

It was a crushing blow for Barnes, who was a short-priced favourite to win.

However the gracious daughter of Cold Chisel frontman Jimmy Barnes said she had relished being embraced by the nation.

"There's been all sorts of feedback, both positive and negative, but the overwhelming majority has been really encouraging and supportive. And I'm so so grateful for it," she said.

It was the most contentious call of the night, with her superstar coach Joel Madden conflicted over his decision to send home one of the strongest singers.

Even Stevens railed against the choice, admitting: "This competition lost out losing either one of us tonight."

But losing out to her best friend softened the blow for Barnes, 29.

"The standard of singers is so high ... if there's anyone I'm going to go down to I'm glad it's my friend," she said.

In other results, Rachael Leahcar won her battle over Adam Hoek to continue her campaign for Team Delta.

New South Wales Central Coast teen Karise Eden also overcame 36-year-old Paula Parore for Team Seal, while Team Keith crooner Adam Martin eliminated Abbie Cardwell.

The battle rounds continue tonight with Campbelltown's Kelsie Rimmer facing the Shire's Brittany Cairns, and Sarah DeBonoup against Yianna Stavrou.

Natalie Wood's daughter with Robert Wagner was arrested this week for coke and heroin possession -- after a nasty fight with someone in her house ... a fight that led to a gunshot.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ, cops were called to the Malibu home of 38-year-old Courtney Wagner last Sunday -- when someone heard a woman screaming ... followed by a gunshot.

When officers arrived, we're told Courtney was found in possession of cocaine and heroin. She was arrested on suspicion of felony drug possession.

The other person involved in the argument -- a male -- was placed under arrest for negligent discharge of a firearm. We're told nobody was injured.

Courtney has since posted $10,000 bail. It's unclear if the other person is still in custody.

Calls to Courtney were not returned.

Tropical storm Alex returns to kill 10

THE first major storm of the Atlantic season was entering the Gulf of Mexico today after unleashing landslides and floods that killed at least 10 people in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Overnight, Alex, which had been downgraded earlier to a tropical depression, strengthened and regained its tropical storm status.

At noon (AEST), Alex, which packed sustained winds of 75km/h, was entering the Gulf of Mexico some 100km west southwest of Campeche, Mexico, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

"Additional strengthening is forecast - and Alex could become a hurricane within the next 48 hours," the NHC said.

Although it was not due to directly hit the massive BP oil spill off the southern US state of Louisiana, the storm could still generate waves that would hamper clean-up and containment efforts.

Officials in Nicaragua told AFP the bodies of six people had been found in or around the northern city of Esteli, swept to their deaths by torrents from the swollen San Lucas river.

In eastern El Salvador, on Central America's Pacific coast, two people drowned when they were carried away by strong currents near San Miguel, while more than 500 people were evacuated to shelters from high-risk areas.

In western Guatemala, two farmers working on a road improvement project were buried and killed by a rain-triggered landslide, the national emergency agency Conred reported.

Forecasters said the storm was expected to dump a total of 10-20cm of rain over the Yucatan Peninsula, southern Mexico and Guatemala bythis afternoon.

Up to 38cm of rain were possible in mountainous areas and forecasters warned of "life-threatening flash floods and mudslides".

Central America was slammed last month by Tropical Storm Agatha, which roared ashore into Guatemala from the Pacific, unleashing heavy rains and floods that left some 275 people dead or missing.

The NHC's long-term forecast has the storm heading over the Gulf of Mexico in the direction of the US-Mexico border, but with a possibility of waves and winds generated by the storm affecting the site of the huge oil slick unleashed by the April 20 explosion of the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig.

But a forecaster at the NHC downplayed a direct hit on the oil cleanup area.

"The storm is not an issue for the spill," said NHC spokesman Dennis Feltgen.

'Terrible carnage' as freak van accident kills 7

Bronx crash

New York police investigate the destroyed van that plunged over the Bronx River Parkway, killing seven people, including three children. Picture: AP Source: AP

  • Seven killed in freak New York van accident
  • Van flew over guardrail, plummeted 30 metres
  • "It's terrible, just carnage."

SEVEN people, including three children, were killed after the van they were in flipped over the railing of an elevated highway and fell about 100 feet (30m) into a rail yard bordering the Bronx Zoo, authorities said.

The van was driving southbound in the left lane of the Bronx River Parkway at about 12:30pm local time when it ricocheted across all lanes of traffic, flew over the railing and fell to the ground, according to police and fire department sources.

Four adults and three children, all of whom were in the van, died in the crash, the New York Post reports.

"It's terrible, just carnage. The passengers didn't stand a chance," an FDNY source at the scene told the New York Post.

According to WNYW-TV, the unidentified adults were an 84-year-old man and three women, ages 80, 45 and 30.

The children were girls, possibly ages 12, 10 and seven, although there were conflicting reports about the age of the youngest child.

"The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed-- it hit something that caused it to be airborne over the railing," said FDNY Deputy Chief Ronald Werner.

"They flew right over the guardrail, didn't even touch it," another law enforcement source said.

"The car was crushed upside down, it fell approximately 100 feet and was crushed. Seven victims were removed from the car, they were pronounced dead on the scene," Mr Werner said, adding that one firefighter suffered a minor injury during a subsequent search of the heavily wooded area where the car landed.

Mr Werner described a heartbreaking scene.

"I've been in the fire department 30 years, sometimes you come upon events that are horrific, and this was one of them. You see young kids hurt or lose their life it's always harder than when you find someone in an older age. It affects all our units," he said.

Ligue 1 round-up

Eden Hazard: Watched by representatives from Manchester United and Manchester City

Sky Bet

Paris St Germain's title hopes were dealt a major blow in a defeat by Lille, while Auxerre took a significant step towards avoiding Ligue 1 relegation as many of their basement-battle rivals dropped points on Sunday

Two goals in eight second-half minutes saw third-placed Lille deal a heavy blow to 10-man PSG's Ligue 1 title hopes.

Javier Pastore put PSG in front in the 48th minute only for Mamadou Sakho to see red for a foul in the area, allowing the electric Eden Hazard, who was watched by representatives of both Manchester United and Manchester City, to draw the sides level from the penalty spot with 20 minutes left. Nolan Roux converted the winning goal soon after.

The result leaves Montpellier five points clear at the summit, while Lille are now just two points adrift of Sunday's opponents in the race for automatic UEFA Champions League football.

Jean-Guy Wallemme's Auxerre gave their survival hopes a huge lift with a superb 4-0 demolition of fellow relegation battlers Brest.

All the goals came in the first half, with Edouard Cisse, Olivier Kapo, Alain Traore and Roy Contout all on target to hand Auxerre their first win in four.

The hammering marked a nightmare start for interim Brest coach Corentin Martins, who was promoted from his position as the club's director of sport on Thursday following the sacking of coach Alex Dupont.

Auxerre remain bottom but are now three points from safety, while third-bottom Brest remain just a point behind 17th-placed Ajaccio.

Caen remain dangerously close to the relegation zone after playing out a 1-1 draw with mid-table Nancy .

The visitors got their noses in front with a goal from Mbaye Niang, but Benjamin Moukandjo equalised nine minutes from time to ensure the points were shared.

The draw leaves Caen just two points above the bottom three with four matches remaining.

Three goals in the last five minutes failed to alter the destination of the points as Rennes collected a fourth win in a row with a 3-1 defeat of relegation battlers Ajaccio.

After Ajaccio's Samuel Bouhours was dismissed in the 11th minute, Julien Feret's 27th-minute goal looked like being the only one of the match.

But there was a late flurry as Razak Boukari and Ilan traded strikes before Yacine Brahimi settled it in injury time.

Bouhours was given a straight red for a bad challenge on Jonathan Pitroipa, almost immediately handicapping the away side, who ended the day a point above the drop zone.

Nine-man Sochaux's bid to escape relegation suffered another setback as they were soundly beaten 3-0 at home by Bordeaux.

Jussie set Bordeaux on their way with the opening goal in the 12th minute and Nicolas Maurice-Belay doubled the lead in the 62nd minute with a penalty in an incident that saw Sochaux midfielder Sebastien Roudet sent off.

Things then quickly went from bad to worse for the hosts as they lost a second player, Modibo Maiga, to a red card two minutes later before Bordeaux wrapped up the scoring 21 minutes from time through Henri Saivet.

St Etienne kept alive their hopes of Europa League qualification with a 1-0 win over strugglers Dijon.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal at the end of the first half as his club boosted their chances of a top-four finish.

Dijon, however, are facing a battle of a different kind with the club just one point above the bottom three with four matches remaining.

Valenciennes took a significant stride towards safety with a workmanlike 2-0 win over 10-man Nice.

Foued Kadir's tap-in and Didier Digard's own goal were sufficient to see off Nice, who played much of the match with 10 men after the early dismissal of Kevin Anin for violent conduct.

Valenciennes are now seven points above the drop zone with four matches remaining, while Nice - who began the day level on 37 points with their hosts - stay four points above the relegation places.

Anti-whalers, meet the ship you're looking for

Sea Shadow

The Sea Shadow would be just the business for anti-whalers. Or whalers, come to think of it. Picture courtesy US Navy Source: Supplied

ACTIVISTS - this is the ship you're looking for.

As bidding stands, the Sea Shadow might be a bit of a bargain, too.

Just $50,000 will get you the ship that inspired the radar-evading vessel that was the base of evil media mogul Elliot Carver in the 007 film Tomorrow Never Dies.

Although it's likely to go for a bit more than $50K. The Sea Shaadow cost the US Defence Department - or more specifically, its research arm DARPA - a whopping $195 million to develop.

Bid on the $195 million Sea Shadow stealth ship now!

That was back in 1984, but the world didn't see the Sea Shadow for nine years. That's because it was loaded with the type of stealth technology that made the US Air Force's F-35 Lightning II so famous.

So, what do you get when you buy a $195m stealth ship from the US military?

Apart from the fact that it looks like the kind of thing the inventor of the word "awesome" was looking at when he first said "awesome", not a lot.

Because sadly, you have to scrap it.

"The ex-Sea Shadow shall be disposed of by completely dismantling and scrapping within the USA," the description on the sale item reads.

"Dismantling is defined as reducing the property such as it has no value except for its basic material content."

So basically, you get 499 tons of scrap metal. If it were all prepared steel, that's roughly $3m worth, so it's unlikely to go for $50K.

Oh, you also get to keep this rusty barge that houses it, and you don't have to scrap it.

But it does make a much bigger target for whalers.

'Red Shirt' to run for Thai government

A THAI protest leader accused of terrorism was released from prison briefly to apply to run in a by-election seen as a key test of the opposition's prospects of success in nationwide polls.

Kokaew Pikulthong, a senior "Red Shirt" involved in the mass rally in Bangkok that ended last month, will stand against incumbent Panich Vikitsreth of the ruling Democrat Party in the July 25 vote in the capital.

A Thai court last week granted permission for Kokaew, the candidate of the main opposition Puea Thai Party, to be released temporarily from Bangkok Remand Prison to register to challenge Panich, a vice foreign minister.

Mr Kokaew, who has not been convicted of any crimes relating to his role in the two-month-long street protest, was later returned to detention, but is expected to seek permission to be released again to campaign for votes.

The Red Shirts' rally, which at its peak attracted up to about 100,000 people demanding immediate elections, sparked outbreaks of violence that left 90 people dead, mostly civilians, and nearly 1900 injured.

Enraged protesters set fire to dozens of major buildings after the army crushed the demonstration by the mostly poor and working class Reds with an assault on their vast fortified encampment in central Bangkok on May 19.

The Red Shirts were campaigning for elections they hoped would oust the government, which they view as undemocratic because it came to power with the backing of the army after a court ruling threw out the previous administration.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva proposed November polls in a bid to end the crippling protests, but shelved the plan because the Reds -- many of whom seek the return of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra -- refused to disperse.

Mr Abhisit, whose government was elected by parliamentary vote in 2008 and enjoys support among the Bangkok-based elite, must call nationwide elections by the end of next year at the latest.

Many of the Red Shirt leaders are in jail facing terrorism charges for their roles in the unrest. The government has rejected the opposition's call for a state of emergency to be lifted in the capital for the by-election.

Maguire ready for Hendry test

Stephen Maguire: Knows that facing Stephen Hendry at the Crucible will be a tough task

Sky Bet

Stephen Maguire is expecting his snookering idol Stephen Hendry to produce some of his old magic in their Betfred.com World Championship quarter-final.

Hendry won the last of his seven titles at the Crucible 13 years ago but is through to the last eight this year after dropping just eight frames in his opening two matches.

After seeing off Stuart Bingham and John Higgins, Glaswegian Maguire now stands in the way of Hendry's first semi-final since 2008.

Maguire admits that facing Hendry at the Crucible - his "second home" - is a daunting task but the former UK champion is determined not to be intimidated by his fellow Scot when the contest begins on Tuesday.

"He's won it seven times, this is the place that you don't want to play him," Maguire said.

"I managed to beat him in the UK Championship but it was only best-of-11. I've never had a long-haul match with Stephen, but I wouldn't be surprised if he came out in the quarter-finals of the World Championship and just start playing the way he can."

Barren spell

Hendry is seven years into the longest barren spell of his career, having not claimed a ranking title since the 2005 Malta Cup, and Maguire believes he may be feeling the pressure despite enjoying some fine form in Sheffield.

He added: "I don't think he'll be as relaxed as maybe he makes out."

Hendry and Maguire have known each other for almost two decades, initially as occasional practice partners, then as rivals.

Prior to making a name for himself as a professional, the young Maguire was a devoted Hendry fan when his compatriot was hovering up world titles during the 1990s.

"Yes he was (my idol). I started watching snooker at 10 or 11, and at that point he won everything, he was incredible, and he was always on TV," Maguire said.

"I was lucky enough to practice with him when I was 14, 15, and I probably tried to base my game on the way I watched him on TV."

The internet flexes its muscle

How to

Steve Mitropoulos, 18 with parents Con and Niki, run a successful Youtube channel with fitness videos. Picture: Kristi Miller Source: The Daily Telegraph

THE handyman appears to be going the same way as CDs, video stores and queues for concert tickets - the internet has made him obsolete.

Online searches in the how-to category are roaring up the charts, with families looking for advice on everything from how to cook basic dishes to fixing chairs and makeup tips.

Mobile phones and devices such as iPads have added to the popularity, with instructional videos able to be viewed while attempting the activity.

YouTube spokeswoman Kate Mason said the how-to category is now the third most searched on YouTube, after music and entertainment.

"Instead of reading about how to poach an egg or change a tyre or apply eyeshadow, it is super easy to have a look at it in front of you," Ms Mason said.

"There is always an expert in some area who is happy to share their knowledge.

"We didn't have this huge library of resources before and there is nothing I have not found an answer for."

Mobile phones are the new viewing platform for their successful conikiTV channel, which has 3852 subscribers and has registered more than 2,300,000 views.

"We are able to see what devices people are watching our content on and ours seems to be very popular worldwide on the mobile phone," said Steve Mitropoulos, who films his show at his home in Sydney's south.

"It is a huge market, huge industry and everyone is starting to utilise online stuff. It's free. Why wouldn't you?"

Mr Mitropoulos has just joined the family business, starring in his own teen bodybuilding channel Teen Muscle TV. He said teenagers loved detailed online workouts as they often lacked the money to join gyms.

"It is popular. There is a huge market for my age group in working out and eating the right food," the 18-year-old personal trainer said.

"It is pretty awesome. I am having the time of my life at the moment."

His parents' Con and Niki Mitropoulos's workout clips are now so popular that producing them has become their full-time job.

More than 60 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube globally every minute.

Xenophon's fact finding mission ends in tears

Xenophon

  • Nick Xenophon goes to Malaysia to learn about elections
  • Senator involved in protest over electoral reforms
  • He's in the line of fire as police throw tear gas

INDEPENDENT Senator Nick Xenophon has had teargas fired in his direction during a demonstration for electoral reforms in central Kuala Lumpur.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators swamped the Malaysian capital today to demand the reforms, ahead of national polls expected soon.

Senator Xenophon, who is in Kuala Lumpur on an international fact-finding mission on election processes in Malaysia, was among the crowds when police fired teargas and chemical-laced water at demonstrators.

Until then it had been a peaceful rally that had included chanting and a speech by Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, Senator Xenophon said.

"The police have just let off canister after canister of teargas," he said soon after the demonstration was broken up.

"People have been injured. People are fainting."

Those targeted included the opposition leader's daughter, Iman Anwar, 22.

She believes police who recognised her deliberately fired a canister in her direction.

Accompanied by one of her father's bodyguards, she ran to a nearby mosque to seek shelter.

"But they were still shooting at us, so we decided to walk in another direction," she said.

The demonstrators had defied a lockdown of central Kuala Lumpur that left it a maze of razor wire and barricades.

"This is a country that the Australian government is happy to do refugee swaps with," Senator Xenophon said.

"It raises serious questions over how authoritarian it is."

Saturday's rally was one of Malaysia's biggest street rallies in recent years, reflecting concerns that Prime Minister Najib Razak's ruling coalition - which has held power for more than 50 years - will have an unfair upper hand in elections that could be called as early as June.

Activists have alleged that the election commission is biased and claimed that voter registration lists are tainted with fraudulent voters.

Senator Xenophon is one of two Australian delegates taking part in the fact-finding mission.

The other delegates are from Germany, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, South Africa, Turkey and Tunisia.

The group were invited to Kuala Lumpur by Mr Anwar.

Redknapp unsure over Modric

Sky Bet

Harry Redknapp has revealed he is unsure whether Luka Modric will still be at Tottenham Hotspur next season, but does not expect Gareth Bale to leave.

Modric was a target for Chelsea throughout last summer and Spurs rejected three bids from their London rivals for the Croatia international.

A new contract for the midfielder has yet to be agreed and speculation has resurfaced that the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City will bid for Modric again at the end of the season.

Team-mate Bale's future has also come in for scrutiny after the winger suggested he would hold talks with Spurs if the club failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Redknapp is confident that the Wales international, and reported Barcelona target, will not be moving on, but is less certain about the future of Modric.

Vital

"Last summer it was vital that we kept hold of Luka," Redknapp said.

"I don't think we will have to do it with people like Gareth Bale this summer.

"Luka, it's different with him. I don't know what he would do. I would be lying if I said I was sure that he would stay. You don't know.

"But certainly I wouldn't see Gareth Bale wanting to leave here.

"At the moment he is happy here, a big fish here. He is still learning the game, a young boy, and this is where he needs to be.

"You would like to think Luka would still be here, but you never know."

Patrick Dempsey's Heroic Rescue -- CAR CRASH CARNAGE [PHOTOS]

"Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey's rescue mission in Malibu this week was even more badass than we thought -- just take a look at the scene of the accident!!!

TMZ broke the story ... a teenage driver crashed and flipped his Mustang on the road right outside Dempsey's Malibu home -- and the actor came to the rescue, crowbar in hand to pry the doors open.

Dempsey successfully pulled the driver from the wreckage -- a 17-year-old named Weston Massett -- who tells TMZ, when he opened his eyes, the actor was looking right down at him.

Massett asked, "Are you famous?" ... and Patrick coolly replied, "I'm a doctor."

We're told Patrick called Massett's mother and told her about the accident -- keeping her calm the entire time. Massett was then airlifted to a nearby hospital, and Patrick followed to make sure the kid was okay.

Miraculously, Massett suffered no serious injuries -- just a concussion and a "stretched" optic nerve. He's expected to make a full recovery.

There was also a passenger in the car, Dylan Miller, but thankfully we're told Miller suffered no injuries whatsoever.

FBI helping hunt for woman missing in Nepal

THE FBI says it's helping the US State Department in the investigation of a Colorado woman who disappeared while trekking alone in Nepal.

Denver FBI spokesman Dave Joly said today the agency was also working with Nepalese authorities on the disappearance of 23-year-old Aubrey Sacco of Greeley.

Ms Saccohas notbeen heard from since April 20, when she e-mailed her parents from Nepal. She planned to finish her trip around April 30.

Her father, Paul Sacco, told the Greeley Tribune that FBI agents had made two or three visits to his home.

Paul Sacco went to Nepal in May to look for his daughter.

He said he recovered her laptop computer and journal from a hotel.

Aubrey Sacco graduated from the University of Colorado last year.

The victory took Peter Moody's six-year-old past the Australian win streak record she equalled in February and also eclipsed the feat of American star mare Zenyatta.

The Goodwood Stakes at the same track in a fortnight's time is her most likely next start, before she makes the journey to Britain to contest the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

Jockey Luke Nolen is already looking forward to seeing Black Caviar compete in Britain.

He told Sky Racing Australia: "Ascot is going to play right to her strengths. She's a mare who appreciates a straight track.

"We've got the best sprinters in the world here in Australia and she is the queen of them, so Ascot holds no fears.

"We haven't been on a plane with her before and it's a long way from home, but she's got a great constitution and a lovely nature to go with it, so I'm sure she'll cope with it fine."

Stronger

Black Caviar broke smartly in the six-furlong Group One to take the early lead.

The jockey pulled the incredible mare back into third before reaching the home turn, but it was clear she was travelling much stronger than her opponents.

While the rest got to work at the top of the straight, Nolen sat motionless and Black Caviar pulled clear without breaking sweat for another resounding success.

Trainer Moody said: "I'm glad to get that run behind us. She had a nice gallop, happy days.

"She's in great shape and it's fabulous to see the people here enjoy today.

"I was pretty happy with where she was (in the race). Luke has got great faith in her ability and so do I. I don't think we ever had too much concern.

"It's incredible how she copes with it all. Most sprinters are wound up, excitable types, whereas she's so laid back and takes it all in her stride.

"She's a remarkable horse."

This is one used kidney - 3 strikes, you're in

cancer kidney

The groundbreaking operation was detailed in today's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Picture: AP Source: AP

  • Man gets kidney handed down from two previous owners
  • Surgeons re-implanted the partially-damaged organ
  • The re-used organ thrived and damage was reversed

IN a medical first, a kidney transplant recipient from Indiana in the US was given a "recycled" organ that was handed down from two previous owners.

Erwin Gomez, a 67-year-old surgeon from Valparaiso, Indiana, received the kidney after its first recipient, Ray Fearing, 27, from Illinois, found that his body rejected the organ.

The groundbreaking operation was detailed in today's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Mr Fearing has a rare disease called FSGS, which causes damage to kidneys, and soon after the transplant in June last year, his new kidney - donated to him by his sister - showed signs it was being affected by his condition.

Doctors acted quickly, as the donated kidney posed life-threating symptoms to Mr Fearing, and examined the possibility of re-implanting the now partially-damaged organ it into another patient without FSGS, rather than discarding it.

Mr Gomez was given the option of taking a twice-used kidney, or remaining on the waiting list for a completely healthy one. He accepted without hesitation, and two weeks after Mr Fearing received the kidney, it was re-implanted into the father-of-five.

The re-used organ thrived in Mr Gomez and just eight days after transplantation at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital, tests showed that the damage to the organ was reversed.

Dr Lorenzo Gallon, Mr Fearing's doctor and medical director of the kidney transplant program at the hospital, said, "When post-surgery tests indicated that Ray was at risk of developing life-threatening conditions due to the reoccurrence of the disease, we had to remove the kidney before he deteriorated. The kidney however was still a relatively healthy, viable organ that could be transplanted into someone else without FSGS."

He added, "After numerous discussions to carefully consider this first-ever procedure, we presented Ray with the option to donate his kidney to someone on the national kidney waiting list rather than discarding it."

Mr Fearing, whose 21-year-old sister Cera donated the organ, was hopeful he will receive another kidney transplant in the future.

"It may not have been my time, but I am grateful that I was able to help another patient," Mr Fearing said. "My day will come."

The surgeons involved in re-implanting the kidney said that as well as successfully recycling a FSGS-damaged organ, they had made "significant strides in better understanding" the cause of the condition.

Victoria Azarenka: knocked out German wildcard Mona Barthel to reach the last four

Sky Bet

Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova both had to go three sets to reach the semi-finals of the WTA Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

Top seed Azarenka needed just shy of three hours on court to see off German wildcard Mona Barthel 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 7-5.

The local favourite hammered down 13 aces but also served up 16 double faults, the last of them coming on her opponent's second match point in the 12th game of the third set.

Azarenka will now face fourth-seeded Agnieska Radwanska, the Pole having seen off reigning French Open champion Li Na of China 3-6 6-2 6-3.

"She (Barthel) keeps producing some great tennis and she showed again today why she is a tough one to beat," said Azarenka.

"Her serve is definitely up there with the best, after more than two-and-a-half hours she was still blasting down aces. I have been saying for a while she is one to watch."

Battled back

Sharapova was on court even longer against Sam Stosur, the second seed having to battle back after losing the first set to clinch a 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 victory after three hours, one minute.

Stosur actually served for the match at 5-4 in the second but couldn't finish off the Russian.

"She has a great serve and she served as well as she ever has against me," she said afterwards.

"It was pretty difficult to play against her, so I am very happy with the win. It's not over until the last point has been played and you've shaken hands.

"She had her chances to win, so I am just happy to have reached the last four. I have a second chance now and I intend to use it."

Next up for Sharapova will be Petra Kvitova, the third seed having no such issues in her quarter-final as she swept aside German Angelique Kerber 6-4 6-4.

Lane Garrison Will Fight Domestic Violence Charge

Exclusive

0427_lane_garrison-02
Lane Garrison
-- the guy who never fought the manslaughter charge against him in 2007 -- will fight tooth and nail in the domestic violence case that was just filed against him -- because he says he never struck his ex GF.

We've learned Garrison -- who was charged yesterday with misdemeanor domestic violence -- will plead not guilty this AM.

Garrison is accused of striking Ashley Mattingly at her Bev Hills apartment last week. The D.A. believes the surveillance video shows the "Prison Break" actor striking Ashley in the face, but Garrison's lawyer, Harland Braun, says Garrison was merely trying to grab his cell phone which Ashley snatched from him.

And there's this twist -- the judge who will arraign Lane today -- Elden Fox -- is the same judge who handled his manslaughter case. Garrison pled guilty in the death of a high school student who was a passenger in Lane's car and killed when the intoxicated actor slammed into a tree.

Hey, what is Molly Ringwald doing now?

  • 80s star finds new fan base on Twitter
  • Sets the record straight in a Reddit interview
  • And yes, Judd Nelson was a bit of a d***

HOW does '80s teen star Molly Ringwald get "hotter" with age? By drinking the blood of Twilight starlet Kristen Stewart.

Fans of the former teen queen learned this comedic gem as the Breakfast Club star took to Twitter and Reddit in one of the website's signature ?Ask Me Anything? interviews.

They also learned that Ringwald - who was once considered the greatest teen star of all time and who describes herself as "everyone's teenage crush" - has quite a sense of humour.

Asked what she would take with her during a zombie apocalypse. She replied: "They'd slow me down but I'd have to take my 2-year-old twins.

"Luckily my husband is a third degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He can break boards with his butt. Just bragging."

Entertainment Weekly was so impressed with her interview they declared the 44-year-old "still cool. Like, really cool" and called her interview a "smashing success".

Jezabel called the exchange "unprecedented awesomeness".

"Molly Ringwald is now your best friend," the gossip site wrote.

But it was questions during the Reddit AMA about her relationship with some of her former 80s teen co-stars that really fired up her fans.

Ringwald confirmed that John Hughes, who directed her in the holy trilogy of teen films 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, almost fired teen hunk Judd Nelson on the set of The Breakfast Club because of his obnoxious behavior toward her.

"This is true," she wrote. "I think Judd was doing the method actor thing during rehearsals. He was wearing Bender's clothes and trying to annoy me. I was fine but John Hughes was very protective of me. ?

Ringwald singled out The Breakfast Club as the movie she would most like to watch again because it had the ?best script? but said making Pretty In Pink was the most fun.

Asked whether she was Team Duckie or Team Blaine - the names of the characters who fought over her in Pretty in Pink - she said ?I am Team James Spader." Spader played the bad guy in the 1986 movie.

When someone asked for details about a proposed "Sixteen Candles" sequel she replied: "I don't remember much about it, but the script eventually became Avatar."

The former Brat Packer recently joined Twitter and is already hooked, offering up more comedic gold to her 11,000 followers.

She?s already called Twitter her new boyfriend, says she doesn?t feed trolls because ?they fart? and tweeted pictures of her sugar snap peas which are "really putting out?.

Ringwald currently stars in the fourth season of Secret Life and is working on a jazz album.

'Bird man' faces court for sitting in tree

A MAN in southwestern China who lived in a eucalyptus tree for more than three months to protest the planned demolition of his home is being tried for disturbing public order.

Chen Maoguo was dubbed the "bird man" for his tree-top sit-in last year in the Chongqing region, staged to protest what he considered inadequate compensation for the razing of his home, the Yunnan Information News said.

His home was one of many to be knocked down to make way for a shopping mall in Fengjie county.

However, his unusual protest beginning last August attracted crowds and media attention, leading to his arrest in November for disturbing public order, said the report, posted on the popular Chinese web portal Sina.com.

During his demonstration, Mr Chen pulled all of his food, water, clothing and other needs up by rope into the small makeshift shelter he constructed in a eucalyptus tree, it said.

The report said Mr Chen was to appear in a local court today. It did not say how old Mr Chen was, or what penalties he could face.

Land seizures, often involving corrupt officials and businesses eyeing real estate profits, have been a growing source of unrest in China.

The problem stirred an uproar last year as a property boom and resulting rash of mass evictions caused a number of violent clashes, protests and even suicides by stubborn homeowners.

Hammer time for Hitchon

Sophie Hitchon: extended British hammer record while competing on American soil

Sky Bet

Sophie Hitchon extended her British hammer record to 71.61 metres in California.

The 20-year-old managed to throw the distance, an Olympic 'A' standard, twice at the OTC-Pre-Olympic Series I meeting in Chula Vista.

"I feel really good and training out here has gone really well. It's just really good to repeat it in competition," she said.

"I love competing. I don't want to be one of those who says I'm throwing this in training but can't reproduce it in competition.

"I think the A standard takes the pressure off my mind, the last few competitions I possibly tried too hard but now I can relax and compete to the best of my abilities."

Coach Derek Evely was delighted with the results at the event, although he insists there is still more to come in the future from Hitchon.

"She's had a great camp out here in the States and she's been throwing 70-plus daily. We just needed to let it happen in competition, and she threw it twice today," he said.

"I think 72 or 73m is not out of the question this year, Sophie is a really great competitor and always performs well in that scenario."

Town recall hitman Higginbotham

Grayson: Recalls Higginbotham

Sky Bet

Huddersfield have recalled striker Kallum Higginbotham from his loan spell at Barnsley ahead of Saturday's clash at Walsall.

Higginbotham, 22, who has made five appearances for Barnsley since joining them in mid-March, will go straight into Town manager Simon Grayson's plans for Saturday's clash at Walsall.

"We allowed Kallum to go out to get games and time on the pitch at a good level and he has done well during his time at Barnsley, so the loan has totally served its purpose," Grayson told Town's official website.

"He will now return to us with some form and first-team action behind him and I'm keen to see what he can do for us in the run-in to the play-offs.

"Kallum will return to the squad and compete for a starting place. It's a great time to come back in and there's a wonderful opportunity for him to make a real difference and impact.

Higginbotham joined Huddersfield on the final day of the January transfer window from Scottish First Division side Falkirk for an undisclosed fee and made two appearances before his loan switch to Barnsley.
