THE information technology sector is the best industry to work in because it encourages hip, innovative young thinkers, a survey has found.

Google Australia has taken first place in BRW Magazine's Best Places to Work survey for 2011.

The survey was based on research by the Great Place to Work Institute Australia, measuring how much employees trust their organisation, have pride in what they do and enjoy the people they work with.

IT companies dominated the results, taking out the top 20 spots in the list of 50 organisations.

BRW editor Kate Mills said Google was a favourite because employees felt a strong sense of recognition and value for their work and were able to spend time pursuing their own projects.

"A lot of these IT companies are in a young sector, are relatively new and have been able to create work cultures from scratch, without the cultural legacies that some of our largest and oldest brands have to battle with internally," she said.

The survey examined 207 companies and responses from 55,400 employees.

Other industries well represented on the list were staffing and recruitment, media, advertising and marketing, professional services and financial services and insurance.
