Deschamps: Guided Juventus back to Serie A in 2007 after their relegation for match fixing

Didier Deschamps admits leaving Juventus for Marseille in 2007 was a mistake, despite committing his future to the French club.

Deschamps came close to leaving the Ligue 1 side this month, with Roma believed to have offered the former France international a route back to Serie A.

However, showdown talks with the Marseille hierarchy convinced Deschamps, who captained Marseille to their 1993 UEFA Champions League success, to stay with the club.

Nonetheless, the Frenchman suggests leaving his beloved Juventus after steering them to promotion from Serie B is a mistake he is still paying for.

He told L'Equipe: "My departure from Juve remains a regret, a mistake that learnt me one thing - never make an immediate decision. I've paid for such an experience.

"I have been labelled 'unmanageable' but by staying at Marseille I can show that labels are sometimes wrong.

'Exemplary behaviour'

"I stayed at OM because it was my first option, because the major shareholders have always shown exemplary behaviour towards me.

"Also, the new chairman Vincent Labrune answered the questions I had to ask.

"I asked to be able to work in an efficient way. So I need to be the only decision-maker, full-stop. Everything has been clarified, everything is under my responsibility."

Despite admitting his error of judgement, Deschamps foresees a bright future in charge of Marseille, having turned down Roma to remain in his homeland.

He added: "The club will also celebrate its 20th year anniversary of the UEFA Champions League victory in 2013, and I want to be a part of it.

"But I had choices. I had propositions, notably one which made me seriously think about, but I didn't want to leave Marseille for a club which is not really of upper level."
