Halperin tweet

A US senior political analyst for Time magazine has sparked a social media flurry after expressing his thoughts towards US President Obama on live TV.

Mark Halperin was "led to believe" there was a seven-second delay between the recording and transmission of events on live TV program Morning Joe on MSNBC.

There wasn't - and when Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski quenstioned Halperin on his thoughts towards Mr Obama, Halperin responded: "I thought he was kind of a dick."

Realising his remark went live, Halperin quickly apologised but the mistaken outburst was seized upon by social media users.

Videos of the event are going viral after being featured on popular tech blog Mashable and news site The Blaze and as of June 30, the event is a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.

In addition to social media outlets, the incident was also seized upon by mainstream news outlets including CBS News, USA Today and the New York Daily News.

Since the incident, Halperin has made an official apology on air as well as tweeting his regrets.

The video of the apology is also being featured heavily and is on its way to going viral.

Jol: Winning start with strong team

Fulham took their first step towards further Europa League success with a comfortable victory against Faroese minnows NSI Runavik in Martin Jol's first match at the helm.

Damien Duff, Danny Murphy and Andrew Johnson netted the all-important goals at Craven Cottage as the West Londoners look to repeat their run to the final in 2010.

While a further 22 matches still stand between them and another appearance in the finale, Fulham already seem to have dispatched NSI with a clinical display in the first leg of their first qualifying round clash.

Heading into the tie, recently-appointed former Tottenham boss Jol sprang something of a surprise by naming the strongest possible starting line-up.

The Dutchman had hinted he would blood in youngsters during the early rounds but named a side packed with experience.

Murphy skippered the Whites and the likes of Brede Hangeland, Bobby Zamora and Duff were included in the starting line-up.

The home side started strongly and within the opening minute Johnson came close to breaking the deadlock, but Helgi Petersen blocked well after neat build-up play by Murphy and Zamora.

Dominate

The Cottagers continued to dominate the opening exchanges, although they struggled to get out of second gear and past NSI's backline.

Zamora attempted a neat header on the quarter-hour mark as Fulham looked to break the deadlock, while Johnson's pace continued to threaten the Faroese side's defence.

Duff was unfortunate not to net the game's first goal in the 23rd minute, twisting and turning on the edge of the box before unleashing a right-footed drive that went just wide of the far post.

Despite Fulham's dominance, Justinus Hansen almost gave NSI a shock lead with a thumping effort that caught Mark Schwarzer unawares and bounced just wide.

The long-range drive seemed to spur Jol's side into life and - after some nice play down the left-hand side - Duff thumped home from inside the 18-yard box.

Reinvigorate

The Republic of Ireland international's 33rd minute goal did not open the floodgates, although NSI goalkeeper Andras Gango was forced to tip over smartly from a curling free-kick from Zamora on the stroke of half-time.

Fulham returned from the break reinvigorated and the visitors were forced to deal with a barrage of attacks from the offset.

Gango palmed away efforts from Johnson, Hangeland and Zamora shortly after the restart, before the latter and Duff blazed wide.

Despite NSI's resilience, the home support did not have to wait long for a second goal after Petersen upended Simon Davies in the box, allowing skipper Murphy to coolly slot home from the penalty spot.

Gango was called into action again moments later, with Johnson forcing the Hungary-born goalkeeper into a fine save.

However, the NSI goalkeeper could do nothing about the Cottagers' third goal as Johnson wriggled free in the box and angled a shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

The 30-year-old saw another effort hit the bar shortly after, before Jol rang the changes in a bid to freshen his side up - handing a debut to former Liverpool man Lauri Dalla Valle.

Murphy attempted a speculative effort in a last bid to get the 14,910 fans on their feet again but Fulham were restricted to a three-goal advantage heading into next week's second leg.

O'Brien's Star shining bright

Tenth Star broke his maiden at the third attempt to give Aidan O'Brien back-to-back wins in the Golden Fleece Stakes at Leopardstown.

Facing just two rivals following the defection of Roman General and Shukhov, Joseph O'Brien's mount was always in close attendance between the Jim Bolger-trained pair of Snowflake Dancer and Whip Rule.

The latter took over a furlong and a half out but the Niarchos family-owned 4-9 favourite was travelling menacingly and eased past at the furlong pole, being pushed clear for a four-length triumph.

'Red Shirt' to run for Thai government

A THAI protest leader accused of terrorism was released from prison briefly to apply to run in a by-election seen as a key test of the opposition's prospects of success in nationwide polls.

Kokaew Pikulthong, a senior "Red Shirt" involved in the mass rally in Bangkok that ended last month, will stand against incumbent Panich Vikitsreth of the ruling Democrat Party in the July 25 vote in the capital.

A Thai court last week granted permission for Kokaew, the candidate of the main opposition Puea Thai Party, to be released temporarily from Bangkok Remand Prison to register to challenge Panich, a vice foreign minister.

Mr Kokaew, who has not been convicted of any crimes relating to his role in the two-month-long street protest, was later returned to detention, but is expected to seek permission to be released again to campaign for votes.

The Red Shirts' rally, which at its peak attracted up to about 100,000 people demanding immediate elections, sparked outbreaks of violence that left 90 people dead, mostly civilians, and nearly 1900 injured.

Enraged protesters set fire to dozens of major buildings after the army crushed the demonstration by the mostly poor and working class Reds with an assault on their vast fortified encampment in central Bangkok on May 19.

The Red Shirts were campaigning for elections they hoped would oust the government, which they view as undemocratic because it came to power with the backing of the army after a court ruling threw out the previous administration.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva proposed November polls in a bid to end the crippling protests, but shelved the plan because the Reds -- many of whom seek the return of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra -- refused to disperse.

Mr Abhisit, whose government was elected by parliamentary vote in 2008 and enjoys support among the Bangkok-based elite, must call nationwide elections by the end of next year at the latest.

Many of the Red Shirt leaders are in jail facing terrorism charges for their roles in the unrest. The government has rejected the opposition's call for a state of emergency to be lifted in the capital for the by-election.

Rebel Alliance

VOLKSWAGEN'S well-known "The Force" advert, featuring a miniature Darth Vader, is the inspiration for Greenpeace's new viral video which criticises the German car manufacturer's stance on CO2 emissions.

The video by Greenpeace is titled "VW: The Dark Side" and parodies the car manufacturer's commercial which featured a small Darth Vader trying in vain to use his powers.

The Volkswagen commercial itself went viral in February this year.

The Greenpeace version extends the Star Wars theme and features a pint-sized Darth Vader who is confronted by Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn and Yoda.

Other memorable characters given a cameo include Princess Leia, C3P0, Chewbacca and Captain Panaka.

As the forces of good and evil prepare to confront each other, a half-completed "Death Star" bearing the VW logo is shown in the sky preparing to fire on Earth.

Greenpeace has also produced a second episode which shows activists unfurling a Greenpeace banner on the Death Star and Darth Vader joining in a dance routine with the Jedi and other characters of the rebel alliance.

"VW: The Dark Side" has been viewed more than 507,078 times since it launched three days ago and the campaign also led to #VW becoming a trending topic on Twitter in certain countries on June 28.

The video is part of a larger campaign launched by Greenpeace, which argues that Volkswagen is one of a group of companies lobbying against laws needed to reduce CO2 emissions.

Volkswagen has not yet commented on the matter via its website but its position on the subject appeared in British newspaper The Independent.

Indonesia visit will happen, says Obama

UNITED States President Barack Obama says his twice delayed trip to Indonesia is going to happen.

His trip to the most populous Muslim nation is tied with a trip to Australia but he made no specific mention of Australia.

Domestic emergencies including the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill have kept Mr Obama from visiting previously.

Mr Obama held a bilateral meeting with Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on the sidelines of Toronto's G20 meeting.

"Because of the crisis that we've had in the Gulf, I've had to delay the trip," Mr Obama told reporters at G20.

"But graciously, for a second time now, the president has re-extended the invitation, and I am confident that we are going to get there."

Pam Anderson: Don't Blame Me For Condo Collapse!

Pamela Anderson is lashing out at a real estate bigwig who claims her alleged flakiness cost him $22.5 mil ... and she's also pissed about rumors that she was sleeping with him.

0629_pam_laurence_EX

TMZ broke the story ... Laurence Hallier filed a countersuit against Pam, claiming she signed a contract to promote the sale of condos in Panorama Towers, a Las Vegas development owned by Hallier.

The countersuit claims Pam bailed on a number of personal appearances and, as a result, Hallier lost numerous condo sales. He wants Pam to pay him $22.5 million.

Pam's lawyer, A. Douglas Mastroianni, tells TMZ, "Pamela Anderson is not any more responsible for the failure of this real estate project than she is responsible for the 2008 real estate downturn or the collapse of Lehman Brothers."

Mastroianni goes on: "The counterclaim is an attempt at publicity, filed by a defendant who reveled in utterly false rumors that he was romantically involved with Ms. Anderson while she was promoting his failed real estate project in London, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas."

For her part, Pam is suing Hallier for her $1 million fee.

Iran 'conducting secret nuclear tests'

William Hague

Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague. Picture: AdelaideNow Source: AdelaideNow

IRAN has carried out secret tests of nuclear-capable missiles, British foreign secretary William Hague says.

Iran is conducting 10 days of war games, which included the public testing of a new, medium-range missile which a Revolutionary Guards commander warned was capable of hitting US bases in Afghanistan and other military assets in the Middle East.

Mr Hague accused Tehran of using the public tests as cover for testing missiles capable of carrying a nuclear payload.

"Iran has also been carrying out covert ballistic missile tests and rocket launches, including testing missiles capable of delivering a nuclear payload in contravention of UN resolution 1929," Mr Hague told lawmakers.

"Tehran also announced that it intends to triple its capacity to produce 20 percent enriched uranium. These are enrichment levels far greater than is needed for peaceful nuclear energy," Mr Hague said.

Britain would "maintain and continue to increase pressure on Iran to negotiate an agreement on their nuclear program," he said.

The US accused Iran of "bragging" about its military threat after it tested 14 missiles on Tuesday (local time).

"Iran, rather than getting itself back in the good graces of the international community ... seems to be bragging about its capabilities, conducting secret programs, parading new missiles in front of the press," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

"So that's not taking us in the direction that we want to go with Iran."

An Iranian Government spokesman denied testing a nuclear-capable missile, Reuters news agency reported.

'Bird man' faces court for sitting in tree

A MAN in southwestern China who lived in a eucalyptus tree for more than three months to protest the planned demolition of his home is being tried for disturbing public order.

Chen Maoguo was dubbed the "bird man" for his tree-top sit-in last year in the Chongqing region, staged to protest what he considered inadequate compensation for the razing of his home, the Yunnan Information News said.

His home was one of many to be knocked down to make way for a shopping mall in Fengjie county.

However, his unusual protest beginning last August attracted crowds and media attention, leading to his arrest in November for disturbing public order, said the report, posted on the popular Chinese web portal Sina.com.

During his demonstration, Mr Chen pulled all of his food, water, clothing and other needs up by rope into the small makeshift shelter he constructed in a eucalyptus tree, it said.

The report said Mr Chen was to appear in a local court today. It did not say how old Mr Chen was, or what penalties he could face.

Land seizures, often involving corrupt officials and businesses eyeing real estate profits, have been a growing source of unrest in China.

The problem stirred an uproar last year as a property boom and resulting rash of mass evictions caused a number of violent clashes, protests and even suicides by stubborn homeowners.

The judges gave Jordan Paris a brutal assessment of his comeback routine, calling it "uncomfortable for everyone". Picture: File Source: The Courier-Mail

A WANNABE funnyman who was exposed as a fraud has bombed on his return to Australia's Got Talent, being told his original material "sucks a---".

Jordan Paris, 22, appeared on the talent show last month doing a routine about singer Robbie Williams.

At the time, judges Dannii Minogue, Kyle Sandilands and Brian McFaddenpraisedhis performance.

But it quickly emerged, it had been done before. English comedian Lee Mackperformed the gag almost word for word in 2007 on the British stand-up comedy show Live at the Apollo.

Last night, Paris had the chance to redeem himself with an original routine.

But it just wasn't funny.

Paris's routine centred on the controversy that followed his first, embarrassing appearance on the show.

"I just sacked my two writers, 'Copy' and 'Paste'," he said.

"I think we're the smartest country in the world ... it took took the United States 10 years to find bin Laden, but it only took Australia 10 minutes to find out I'm not Lee Mack."

He was then backed by a choir as he sang The joke was on me.

He explained afterwards: "I was really coming back to have fun, take the mickey out of myself."

Responses from the show's judges included:

Brian McFadden: "You just kind of collapsed tonight."

Dannii Minogue: "It was uncomfortable for everyone."

Kyle Sandilands: "My God! Stick to ripping off other people's stuff because your stuff sucks a---."

Twitter users too were quick to judge, with Jordan Paris quickly trending on the microblogging site and initial responses including: "Painful to watch", "cringe worthy" and "definition of crash and burn".

As the call was put out for SMS votes, Paris added: "If you can just text me a few of your jokes too."

But perhaps Paris will have the last laugh after all.

He has fallen head over heels for fellow entrant and opera singer Clara Helms, who also appeared on tonight's show.

Woods: Wants to get himself fully fit

Sky Bet

Tiger Woods insists he can still overhaul Jack Nicklaus' 18-major record despite admitting his participation at the Open Championship is still in doubt.

Woods has not hit a single shot for almost seven weeks due to injury after aggravated knee and Achilles injuries at the Players Championship.

And although Woods will not compete at Royal St George's unless he is 100 per cent, the 14-time major winner believes there is no reason why he should give up his bid to pass Nicklaus.

"Absolutely not," said Woods. "He won when he was 46, right?

"I've still got some time and on top of that we're about the same pace I believe in years on Tour and majors won.

"I feel pretty confident of what my future holds and very excited about it. I'm 35, I'm not 65 - I've still got some years ahead of me.

Practice

"Golf is unlike any other sport. I mean, (Tom) Watson was 59 when he almost won (the 2009 Open)?

"We can play for a very long time. What I would like to do is play this game for as long as I want to and I feel like my best years are still ahead of me.

"I just need to get out there and practice and then implement it and put it all together."

On Rory McIlroy's eight-shot US Open victory, he added: "That was pretty good, wasn't it? That was some seriously good playing.

"He had softer conditions and he was able to go low, but also was able to continue pushing it.

"That's what's fun when you have a lead, to keep building on it and keep pushing. That was very impressive playing - to do that at a US Open to be that aggressive the entire time, that was cool to watch."

Dodger Beating Victim's Family: TMZ Is Being Unfair

The family of Bryan Stow -- the man who was brutally beaten outside Dodger Stadium -- is upset at TMZ's stories over the last day, claiming a remark about a hot dog in no way justified the beating.

Stow's family is upset that we posted the video, showing Stow in a verbal altercation with a Dodger fan. The Dodger fan, Juan Banda, claims Stow had loudly said, "I rather eat my own feces than a Dodger dog."

A rep for the family tells TMZ, "There has been enough hurt and pain for Bryan, his family, friends and especially his two young children." The rep believes we suggested Bryan's attack may have been warranted.

The rep says, "Banter is expected at any sporting event. Violence should not be. Bryan is not a violent person. That shows as he remains seated, hands up as someone is in his face yelling. Over what? Comments about a hot dog?!!"

Tropical storm Alex returns to kill 10

THE first major storm of the Atlantic season was entering the Gulf of Mexico today after unleashing landslides and floods that killed at least 10 people in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Overnight, Alex, which had been downgraded earlier to a tropical depression, strengthened and regained its tropical storm status.

At noon (AEST), Alex, which packed sustained winds of 75km/h, was entering the Gulf of Mexico some 100km west southwest of Campeche, Mexico, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

"Additional strengthening is forecast - and Alex could become a hurricane within the next 48 hours," the NHC said.

Although it was not due to directly hit the massive BP oil spill off the southern US state of Louisiana, the storm could still generate waves that would hamper clean-up and containment efforts.

Officials in Nicaragua told AFP the bodies of six people had been found in or around the northern city of Esteli, swept to their deaths by torrents from the swollen San Lucas river.

In eastern El Salvador, on Central America's Pacific coast, two people drowned when they were carried away by strong currents near San Miguel, while more than 500 people were evacuated to shelters from high-risk areas.

In western Guatemala, two farmers working on a road improvement project were buried and killed by a rain-triggered landslide, the national emergency agency Conred reported.

Forecasters said the storm was expected to dump a total of 10-20cm of rain over the Yucatan Peninsula, southern Mexico and Guatemala bythis afternoon.

Up to 38cm of rain were possible in mountainous areas and forecasters warned of "life-threatening flash floods and mudslides".

Central America was slammed last month by Tropical Storm Agatha, which roared ashore into Guatemala from the Pacific, unleashing heavy rains and floods that left some 275 people dead or missing.

The NHC's long-term forecast has the storm heading over the Gulf of Mexico in the direction of the US-Mexico border, but with a possibility of waves and winds generated by the storm affecting the site of the huge oil slick unleashed by the April 20 explosion of the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig.

But a forecaster at the NHC downplayed a direct hit on the oil cleanup area.

"The storm is not an issue for the spill," said NHC spokesman Dennis Feltgen.
