MUSIC pioneer and AIDS activist Vince Lovegrove, who had a life that was touched by tragedy, was killed in a car accident on the far north coast on the weekend.

Police said a Volkswagen Kombi was travelling along Binna Burra Rd near Federal, inland from Byron Bay, when it left the road and rolled between 1am and 3am on Saturday.

A passerby reported the accident to police just before 9.30am.

The Australian Recording Industry Association confirmed Lovegrove's death on Twitter yesterday.

Aussie music loses a great Love

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Aus music legend Vince Lovegrove, a true pioneer of our industry, he will be missed by all," the tweet said.

Lovegrove, 64, knew great tragedy in his life, losing both his wife Suzi Sidewinder in 1987 and son Troy to AIDS in 1993.

He told their stories in two documentaries, Suzi's Story and A Kid Called Troy, and became well known as an AIDS activist.

Lovegrove was considered a pioneer in the music industry, playing alongside Bon Scott in The Valentines in the 1960s, who he later introduced to AC/DC, and managing the Divinyls in the 1980s.

Lovegrove also worked as a music journalist and wrote his last post on his web blog MUSICBACKTRACK on Friday.

His daughters Holly and Lilli said last night: "(We) wish to thank everyone for their condolences at the loss of our beautiful father Vince. A private funeral is proposed and a public memorial will be held in Sydney at date to be advised."

Hoodoo Gurus bass player and former Divinyls bass player Rick Grossman said Lovegrove was a "driven, passionate man".

"He was passionate, obsessive about friends, music and the people he loved. He was very protective and very loyal," Grossman said.
