  • Patent said to reveal details of Apple's rumoured HDTV
  • Universal Remote said to be like a Wii controller
  • Technology could be integrated into future iPhone

APPLE is reported to have filed a patent that could allow users to control its rumoured HDTV with an iPhone or an iPad.

The patent request was discovered by Patently Apple, who believes the new software is part of Apple?s planned attack on the TV market.

The website features concept drawings and said the Advanced Universal Remote will control TVs and other devices like a Wii controller.

?You take a photo of your current TV remote and it sends it to iCloud for analysis,? the website said.

?It then sends a ?virtual copy? of your remote, functionality and all, to your iPhone. You're now able to control your current TV with Apple's advanced universal remote and enjoy all of Apple's TV remote features and likely tie-in products and services.?

The website said the remote may include microphones to determine the sound level or if the sound level changes.

While there are many apps that transform your phone into a TV remote already available, Patently Apple believes Apple will integrate the technology into a future iPhone or other iOS devices instead of an app add-on.

Apple recently released its third-generation Apple TV set-top box, which delivers full high-definition video to the screen. But the company is widely believed to be working on an HD television of its own called the iTV.

Earlier this year a former Apple employee revealed details of the TV after allegedly seeing it in the company's design studio.

The unnamed source said the Apple senior vice president of industrial design Jonathan Ive has "a slick 50-inch TV" inside the locked-down studio.
