DINOSAURS have helped an Australian app developer take out the top prize at a major US technology awards ceremony.

Melbourne?s Matthew Snowden won the ?Best Application? award for his ?cinematic style education app?, Inside the World of Dinosaurs, at the Appy Awards in San Francisco.

The interactive application features more than 60 3D dinosaurs, 40 animated fight scenes, 200 pages of information and a library of videos and historical images.

Oh, and did we mention it was narrated by Stephen Fry?

Mr Snowden, head of M5859 Studio, told news.com.au he was both surprised and honoured by his win, which came just seven weeks after release.

?Stephen (Fry) is a big Apple fan and he has a great social media presence,? Mr Snowden, 44, said. ?He has been very influential on the success of this app.?

Mr Snowden said he created the app as an educational guide for children aged five to 13 - the time when kids generally first get excited by dinosaurs ? but it was great for adults too.

?If an adult picks up the app and sees 3D dinosaurs fighting in mid-air, with dynamic cinema style graphics, and dust flying off them as they engage in a fight, they?ll realise they haven?t seen dinosaurs in this way before,? he said.

Since launching the app he has a new best dinosaur - swapping from childhood favourite the T-Rex to the Monolophosaurus.

?I like it because it?s got this beautiful strong body, and strong neck and jaws,? he said. ?When you see the two of them locked in a fight, they look very strong. I just love it.?

Mr Snowden would not say how many downloads the app has received but that it was ?going very well?.

Inside the World of Dinosaurs is only available on the iPad but Mr Snowden said M5859 Studios will be releasing an iPhone app in the coming months. Android users will have to wait until Christmas before they can use the app on their tablet and smartphones.

The Appy Awards is an annual technology awards ceremony that celebrates the most successful and popular applications for mobile devices, PCs and social networking sites.
