Doug Christiansen: Guided Belfast to the regular season title

Sky Bet

Belfast Giants sealed a second Elite League regular season title with a convincing 5-1 win over Sheffield Steelers.

The Yorkshiremen were the side able to catch the Giants, but the hosts wrapped up the victory in style.

Belfast, who last won the league title in 2005/6, showed their intent straight from the off, with the opening goal coming at 5.18 from Robert Dowd.

Just 24 seconds later and it was 2-0 as Jon Pelle dispatched the puck past John DeCaro in the Steelers cage.

Even this early it looked like an uphill struggle for Steelers, although they pulled one back at 18.33 with Jeff Legue blasting home.

Giants reasserted their dominance as the middle period wore on, though, and they were rewarded by a third goal on the powerplay timed at 33.19 with Aaron Clarke scoring.

Steelers could not cope with the impressive home side at all and early in the third period it was 4-1 with Giants powerplay unit proving once again why they are the best in the league as Paul Deniset fired into the net at 45.02.

Giants were brimming with confidence and the icing on the cake was provided by skipper Jeremy Rebek as he blasted the puck past DeCaro for Giants third powerplay goal.
