GOOGLE is planning on going boldly where somewhere has gone before.
In a move likely to fan the flames of its intense rivalry with Apple, Google is planning on releasing its own version of Siri - Apple's much-hyped "digital personal assistant".
Earlier reports that claim Google's version of Siri would have a more "Star Trek-like approach" have been borne out by news the Android rival will be named "Majel".
As in Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the actor who provided the voice for the Starship Enterprise.
Tech blog Android and Me claims Majel could be out by the end of the year.
Anonymous tipster "Ted" confirmed to Android and Me that Majel could be activated by the Jean Luc Picard command "Computer...".
?It?s definitely as good, or better, than Siri," Ted wrote, before describing how Majel offered search results on a tablet courtesy of swipeable "trays".
"If you say ?show me the Statue of Liberty? it?ll automatically take you to Google Image results, but another tray beneath it might be its location on Google Maps and then another tray might have a Wikipedia page," Ted wrote.
Another anonymous Google gave Android and Me more details on Majel "in total violation of the (non-Disclosure Agreement). Read what they have to say about Majel here.
The blog has been swamped with calls from readers wanting Google to license Majel Barrett-Roddenberry voice samples, and it claims Google "has the technology to do it".
