Cable guy finds bear in basement

ANIMAL control officers tranquilised a large black bear today after a cable repair man found the animal in the basement of a home in Hopatcong, New Jersey, about 64km west of New York City.

The cable guy said he heard a growl when he entered the basement of the home and turned around to see the bear staring back at him. He then scampered out of the basement and called the authorities.

A crew from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife went to the home and fired a dart into the bear, which had left the basement by they time they arrived.

It was unclear how the bear got into the basement. It had been seen wandering through the neighbourhood earlier in the day.

Bear problems are common enough in Hopatcong that the Police Department has a section of its website dedicated to bears. More than 400 bears were killed in a bear hunt in New Jersey last week that was held to thin the population.
