Oscar De Marcos: On target for Athletic Bilbao against Real Oviedo
Atletico Madrid have work to do in the second leg of their tie against Albacete after losing 2-1 away from home, while Athletic Bilbao beat Real Oviedo 1-0.
Atletico Madrid coach Gregorio Manzano decided to rest most of his first-choice players for the first leg of their fourth-round clash, and third-tier Albacete took full advantage to pick up an impressive victory.
Antonio Calle opened the scoring for the home side from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark after the referee ruled that Alvaro Dominguez had handled the ball.
Albacete then lost captain Miguel Nunez Borreguero to a straight red card following a foul in the area, but Spain Under 21 international Adrian fired his spot-kick over the crossbar.
Atletico's night took a turn for the worse 15 minutes into the second half when Dominguez was dismissed for bringing down Calle.
Home defender Zurdo whipped the resulting free-kick over the wall and into the corner of the net to make it 2-0 before Adrian made the most of a defensive howler to pull a goal back 20 minutes from time and keep the tie delicately poised.
Albacete's third-tier counterparts Real Oviedo also put up a good fight in the first leg of their clash with Athletic Bilbao, before slipping to a narrow defeat.
The only goal of the contest came in the 11th minute when Oscar De Marcos struck for Athletico Bilbao.
From that point on it was a keenly-contested affair, leaving Oviedo with a chance to overturn the deficit in Bilbao and reach the last 16.
