- Google axes 10 of its major products
- Cuts include social search, Aardvark
- Focuses more resources on G +
TECHNOLOGY giant Google has announced it will be shutting down 10 of its products ahead of the public launch of its social networking site.
On the chopping block is social search service Aardvark which the company bought for $50 million last year.
The discontinued products also include Fast Flip, Google Maps API for Flash, Notebook, Desktop, Google Pack, Google Web Security, Image Labeler, Sidewiki and Subscribed Links.
Senior vice-president Alan Surgeay posted on Google?s official blog that the cuts were about using resources effectively.
?This will make things much simpler for our users, improving the overall Google experience," Mr Surgeay said. "It will also mean we can devote more resources to high impact products.
?As for our users, we?ll communicate directly with them as we make these changes, giving sufficient time to make the transition and enabling them to take their data with them.?
Many Google employees are expected to move over to the world?s fastest growing social network, Google+.
It is not known when the site will go public but many are predicting it will launch early next year.
The cuts follow the closure of the company?s experimental testing centre Google Labs in July last year.
But Google last week announced the launch of Google Offline which allows users to access their Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Documents on their PC without the need for an internet connection.
Anyone with a Chrome browser will be able to access Google Offline on their computer.
