BRITISH film and TV comic Rowan Atkinson was in hospital today after spectacularly crashing his McLaren F1 supercar on a road in east England.
The 56-year-old lost control of the 650,000 ($1.05 million) vehicle, which has a top speed of 368km/h, before smashing into a tree and then a lampost, the Daily Mirror reported.
The car then burst into flames, with Atkinson managing to pull himself free from the wreckage.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident near the village of Haddon, Cambridgeshire at 7.30pm, the Evening Star reported.
Firefighters put the blaze out and Mr Atkinson, well known for his Mr Bean and Blackadder characters, was taken to Peterborough District Hospital suffering from a shoulder injury, the Mirror said.
One onlooker said: "Rowan is lucky to be alive considering the state of the car."
No other car was reportedly involved.
It is the second timeAtkinson crashed the supercar. The front of the car was wrecked in the previous collision with the rear of a Rover Metro in Lancashire, in October 1999.
