THE battle for Green Square in Tripoli is still raging... on Wikipedia.

Just hours after rebels were said to have gained control of the landmark in downtown Tripoli and christened it "Martyrs' Square", its entry on Wikipedia was updated as well.

"Please be advised this article will be moved to Martyrs' Square, Tripoli within the next 12 hours. Thanks," wrote Camilo Sanchez of the change.

"Seems a bit rushed. The fight is ongoing," replied another user.

This morning ? as news.com.au was writing this story ? the name was changed back again.

"On a second thought we better move this article back to Green Square since it seems lots of the information from that country is very unreliable," said the user who made the original switch.

"There is this possibility of edit war with the name of this article so I would recommend for it to be protected for now. Thanks."

Wikipedia isn't the only online battleground for naming rights to the square.

On Google Maps, the landmark is now called "Martyrs' Square" as well ? though searching for either name will still bring it up.

Like Wikipedia, Google allows users to update its maps, however a Google employee must approve each change for it to go live.
