A US teen who had been facing jail after placing a blow-up sex doll in an Indiana high school girls' bathroom for a prank - triggering a three-hour security lockdown - will escape detention if he stays out of trouble for a year.
Prosecutors agreed to dismiss the felony criminal case against 18-year-old Tyell Morton, although he will have to complete eight hours of community service for Rush County Schools, The Indianapolis Star said.
State and local police were called to Rushville Consolidated High School on May 31 - the last day of term - when a janitor spotted a disguised figure wearing latex gloves and a hooded sweatshirt.
The sighting in Rushville, a community of 6300 about 64km south-east of Indianapolis, sparked fears of explosives.
Morton was soon arrested and faced charges which could have seen him jailed for eight years - leading to a national debate about whether there was an overreaction to a senior prank gone awry.
Morton was held in custody for five days after his arrest and was prevented from participating in his graduation, but was allowed to receive his diploma.
The case against him had been set for trial on September 13, but prosecutors filed the paperwork to dismiss the matter late last week. The felony institutional criminal mischief and disorderly conduct charges were replaced by a misdemeanor charge, The Rushville Republican reported.
Under the agreement, Morton must not commit any crimes for the next 12 months and must not use alcohol or drugs.
