Teen charged with murder of UK riots 'hero'

A 16-year-old boy will face court today charged with the murder of west London man Richard Bowes, who died after confronting rioters last week and trying to stamp out a fire they had started.

The teen, from Hounslow, south-west London, is also charged with violent disorder and four separate burglaries of commercial premises. His mother, 35, will also face court today, charged with perverting the course of justice.

Daren Streeter, head of the Crown Prosecution Service London Homicide Unit, told Sky News, "At this stage, there is a reasonable suspicion that the 16-year-old was responsible for the unlawful killing of (Mr) Bowes. It is clearly in the public interest that he be prosecuted for this offense.

"As with all prosecutions, we will keep the case against the defendant under review and consider any new evidence provided to us by the police during their ongoing investigation into this incident."

The teen joins a 22-year-old man arrested on Friday over the death of 68-year-old Mr Bowes, who was brutally attacked during rioting in Ealing and later died in the hospital. Mr Bowes was branded "a hero" by the mayor of London, Boris Johnson.

As court proceedings stemming from the widespread rioting continue, a third man appeared in a Birmingham court today charged with the murder of three men in the West Midlands city.

Adam King, 23, stands accused alongside Joshua Donald, 26, and a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named, of running down the trio with a car after the rioting spread from London to other English cities.

By today, London's Metropolitan Police had arrested 1635 people in connection with violence, disorder and looting, with charges laid against 940 of them. Police in Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham had arrested another 919, charging 337.
