Nine News Brisbane are at the centre of a scandal after it was revealed that they have faked news crosses to the Daniel Morcombe search site. Vision supplied.

IT'S the type of thing that happened in the fictional current affairs show Frontline.

Host Mike Moore would cross to a reporter who was allegedly in a hostile zone, but was really nowhere near danger, the Courier-Mail reported.

Fiction became reality last weekend when Channel 9's weekend news bulletins crossed to reporters in a helicopter allegedly hovering over the Daniel Morcombe search site "near Beerwah".

On Saturday, the helicopter was in reality over Chapel Hill in Brisbane's western suburbs. On Sunday, the chopper was sitting on Channel 9's helipad, with the rotor blades whirring.

In a statement released by the network last night, Nine admitted that they had faked the crosses to the news helicopter.

"During Saturday and Sunday night's Brisbane bulletin we crossed live to a reporter in our helicopter updating the Daniel Morcombe case," the statement said. "On both occasions we said the helicopter was near Beerwah. This was not the case.

"The fact that the location was misreported is totally unacceptable.

"We have launched a thorough investigation into all the facts surrounding these reports."

On Saturday night, news presenter Eva Milic crossed to reporter Melissa Mallet in the Nine News helicopter with the caption, or super, reading "near Beerwah".

The Air Services Australia aviation map (below, far right) shows that the helicopter circled in the air near Mt Coot-tha for the duration of the cross.

On Sunday they crossed to reporter Cameron Price, again with the super "near Beerwah" (below, left), but this time rival network Seven filmed the helicopter on Nine's helipad outside the studio for the duration of the cross (inset).

In a statement to industry website Mumbrella, a Nine spokesperson said "the producer was unaware until it was too late to abort or delay the cross".

Seven's news director Rob Raschke said he could not understand Nine's response. "The idea of not knowing where a $3 million helicopter is defies belief," he said.

"It would concern me if a producer didn't know where their helicopter was."
