Ferguson: Believes his United side will relish pitting their wits against City

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is looking forward to competing with free-spending Manchester City for top honours in 2011/12.

United remain top dogs in Manchester for now, having secured an historic 19th top flight title last season.

City, though, are closing fast, with their FA Cup success last term suggesting they are heading in the right direction.

It has taken considerable investment from the Blues' ambitious owners to lift them into contention, with further funds pumped into the squad this summer.

United have, however, splashed out themselves in an effort to stay ahead of their fiercest rivals, both at home and abroad.

Spending

Ferguson knows it is imperative for any side to seek continuous improvement and he accepts that City are now realistic challengers to United's Premier League crown.

He believes they may strengthen further before the current transfer window slams shut, but he insists United will be ready to handle anything their neighbours can throw at them.

"Because of the particular facet of the club that they have the money to spend, I thought maybe they would spend more this summer and that may still happen, they may still sign a couple more players," he said.

"We get this almost every year when clubs round about us buy, and that's how you view the importance of winning the league these days.

"Chelsea had this great spell of buying when Jose [Mourinho] first went there and we accepted that challenge. It's good to accept challenges, it keeps the complacency away from your door and we carry on as best as we can."
