Dixon: Unstoppable at Mid-Ohio

Sky Bet

Scott Dixon fought off the challenge of Target Chip Ganassi team-mate Dario Franchitti to claim victory in the IndyCar round at Mid-Ohio.

The New Zealander dominated qualifying to secure his first pole position of the season and eased to victory after making his decisive move 24 laps from the finish.

After controlling much of the race, Dixon stayed on the tail of rookie James Hinchcliffe until the Canadian driver finally pitted for the first time on lap 53.

Franchitti attempted to snatch away the victory when he beat Dixon out of the pit-lane after a full-course caution but the Scot could not stay ahead of his team-mate.

Dixon surged back to head of the field on the 61st lap before pulling away to take the chequered flag with ease.

Franchitti retains the lead in the championship standings after his second place but admitted that Dixon's pace was simply too much to handle.

"He was in a different zip code today," Franchitti said.

It was Dixon's third win at the tight and twisty circuit, with Franchitti eventually finishing 7.6508 seconds back ahead of Ryan Hunter-Reay, Takuma Sato and Tony Kanaan.

Title contender Will Power could only manage 14th position after he lost out in the pit-stops due to a badly-timed safety car period.

Danica Patrick briefly led but eventually finished 21st, one place behind Hinchcliffe.
