A MEXICAN beauty queen has lost her chance at becoming Miss World after claiming officials took her crown away, as she put on 2.7 kilos.

Cynthia De La Vega appeared on Good Morning America and claimed officials took away her Miss Mexico title because she dared to gain the weight.

The removal of her tiara, which she won last September, means that she will not be allowed to compete in the Miss World competition that will take place in London in November.

"I feel healthy enough to represent my country, and I think this is an injustice," De La Vega said. "They took away the crown that I earned. That is mine."

"I was very, very excited because I thought this would be a great experience," Cynthia said, adding of her reaction to the stripped sash: "I was very sad and very deceived. I cried and cried and cried."

De La Vega said that the organisers of the competition ordered her to adopt a strict diet, but that they did not supply her with proper nutritional advice, and did not make it clear that her physical condition was of concern.

The organisers have denied that her weight was an issue. Lupita Jones, the director of Nuestra Belleza Mundo Mexico, said that she was dismissed for "a lack of dedication and discipline".

She had not complied "with the recommendations and goal agreed upon for her preparation", it was claimed.
