THE musical party could continue for Aussie pop sensation Gotye, a favourite to win the best video gong at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.

The Melbourne artist who stormed the world's charts with one of the best break-up anthems of all time, 'Somebody That I Used To Know' (featuring Kimbra), is expected to walk the red carpet with global superstars including Rihanna, Pink, One Direction and Katy Perry, ahead of the blockbuster telecast (to air AEST 9am on Foxtel).

Gotye aka Wally de Backer scored his big US break courtesy of the stop motion video, created and directed by award-winning filmmaker Natasha Pincus which was championed via Hollywood's Twitterati, including Ashton Kutcher and Drew Barrymore.

Widely imitated and parodied on YouTube and US late night comedy shows, the artsy Aussie clip will battle Katy Perry's Wide Awake, Rihanna's We Found Love, Drake feat Rihanna's Take Care and M.I.A's Bad Girls.

In a teenage dream, One Direction and Taylor Swift are expected to perform.

But as with most award galas, who Swift walks up the ruby rug with will be of just as much interest as her performance - with gossips expecting the country teen princess to bring new beau Conor Kennedy.

All eyes will also be on the always controversial reunion of Rihanna and her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, both on the guest list.

Host Kevin Hart has joked he will strap Kanye West into his VMA chair with a seatbelt in a bid to avoid another 'I'm gonna let you have your moment' stage crash.

He'll have competition in the scene-stealing department from his girlfriend Kim Kardashian, not one to miss a flashbulb moment.
