US air strikes kill 15 al-Qaeda militants

US air strikes targeting leaders from Yemen's active al-Qaeda branch have killed 15 suspected militants, Yemeni officials said today.

Yemeni security and military officials said missiles struck a school and a car in Abyan province in an area between Lauder and Mood where the militants were believed to be hiding.

A Western official in Washington confirmed the US carried out a strike against suspected leaders from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, but said initial indications were that five people were killed. The official did not say where the strike occurred or specify whether it was carried out by a drone or a warplane.

All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorised to release the information.

Security across Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country, has largely collapsed during the nearly year-old popular uprising against longtime autocratic President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The militants have exploited the security vacuum, stepping up operations across the weakly governed provinces while authorities focused their resources on putting down the uprising that was inspired by other Arab Spring revolts.

Also today, armed tribesmen from the al-Mahweet province kidnapped six United Nations workers - an Iraqi woman, a Palestinian woman, a Colombian man, a German man and two Yemeni men. The assailants demanded that the government release fellow tribesmen from prison.

Tribes in Yemen have historically used kidnapping as a way of getting concessions from the government and hostages are ordinarily well treated before being released.

Yemeni Interior Minister Ali al-Omrani, meanwhile, escaped an assassination attempt when his car came under fire today outside the cabinet building in the capital Sanaa, according to his spokesman Abdul-Basit al-Qaidi.

Online with kids is out - teachers warned

Teachers have been warned against contacting students online. Picture: ThinkStock Source: The Daily Telegraph

  • Victorian Government has released new guidelines
  • They are designed to protect teachers' reputations
  • Online smear campaigns put teachers' careers at risk

TEACHERS have been warned against contacting students online amid fears too many are befriending their charges on Facebook.

In a major crackdown on social media use in schools, theVictorian Government has released new guidelines designed to protect teachers' reputations.

Educators say online smear campaigns by students have put teachers' careers at risk, with some being forced to move schools.

The Government says the guidelines will also help protect students from inappropriate conduct by teachers.

"That boundary between being a teacher and a friend is one which teachers have to sometimes tread very carefully," Minister for the Teaching Profession Peter Hall said.

"It's important to provide parents with the confidence that their teachers have the knowledge available for them to do their job well."

Under the online directives launched today, teachers are also cautioned against:

CONTACTING students by mobile phone or email "without a valid educational context".

POSTING any "offensive or slanderous" material about students, parents or colleagues.

SHARING content from personal social media sites, such as their Facebook accounts, with students.

UPLOADING images of themselves that have "potential to negatively affect their reputation".

"VENTING" about their work, or posting personal or political opinions.

Victorian Independent Education Union secretary Deb James welcomed the campaign, saying social networking had become a minefield for teachers.

She said examples included students "outing" teachers, irrespective of their sexuality.

"It's been very challenging. There has certainly been some situations . . . of people even needing to move to a new school community. It can be as serious as that, in terms of the stuff that can be sent around by students."

Australian Education Union state president Mary Bluett also praised the guidelines.

Cyber safety expert Susan McLean said many teachers were absolutely naive about the risks, saying she came across teachers with students as Facebook friends "three or four times a week".

"I've seen the particularly nasty stuff like 'Mr Jones is the local pedo(phile)'."

Ms McLean said another case involved a student who successfully set up an account in the name of his deputy principal.

"It's just another avenue to wreak havoc with someone else's life without thinking."

Blues announce big loss

Sky Bet

Chelsea have announced a total loss of 67.7million for the financial year ending June 30th 2011.

The club revealed its operating loss had reduced from a figure of 70.9million as it aims to fall in line with UEFA's new financial fair play rules.

Transfer fees were a main contributor to the loss, while the club was able to declare a record group turnover of 222.3million.

The figure stood at 205.8million last year, and increased thanks to higher receipts from the UEFA Champions League together with a rise in income from the central Premier League television contract relating to overseas broadcasting.

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck told the club's official website: "The club is focused on complying with the requirements of UEFA's financial fair play regulations while maintaining its ability to challenge for major trophies.

"We would expect this to be reflected in our results for the current financial year."

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay added: "Achieving a record level of turnover is satisfying given the economic background against which we are operating."

Syrian troops push forward before UN talks

SYRIAN troops have crushed pockets of resistance on the outskirts of Damascus hours before key UN talks.

Soldiers early today moved into the two remaining towns still in rebel hands, activists said.

"Intense shooting was heard in Zamalka and Arbeen as the tanks advanced," the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, citing its network of sources on the ground. Regime forces made sweeping arrests in the nearby town of Rankous, activists said.

Government forces yesterday regained control of most of the capital's eastern suburbs after dissident soldiers captured the territory last week.

Yesterday's death toll rose to 100 people, making it one of the bloodiest days since the uprising began in March, according to activists.

The bloodshed has increased as western and Arab countries step up pressure on President Bashar Assad's ally Russia to overcome its opposition to a draft resolution.

The draft resolution demands that Assad halt the crackdown and implement an Arab peace plan that calls for him to hand over power to his vice president and allow creation of a unity government to pave the way for elections.

If Assad fails to comply within 15 days, the council would consider "further measures," a reference to a possible move to impose economic or other sanctions.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the British and French foreign ministers were heading to New York to push for backing during talks today at the United Nations.

"The status quo is unsustainable," Ms Clinton said.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe described what is happening in Syria as a "scandal" adding that Assad "has blood on his hands, so it's not possible that he continues to assume responsibilities".

Russia has been one of Assad's strongest backers. In October, Moscow vetoed the first council attempt to condemn Syria's crackdown and has shown little sign of budging in its opposition. It warns that the new measure could open the door to eventual military intervention, the way an Arab-backed UN resolution led to NATO airstrikes in Libya.

Juppe ruled out a military intervention saying "things are very different from what happened in Libya. For example, in Syria you have communities that are divided and any exterior intervention could lead to a civil war".

A French official said the draft UN resolution has a "comfortable majority" of support from 10 of the Security Council's 15 members, meaning Russia or China would have to use their veto power to stop it. The official said Russia had agreed to negotiate on the draft, but it was not yet clear if it would be willing to back it if changes were made.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with department rules.

The United Nations estimated several weeks ago that more than 5400 people have been killed in Syria. It has been unable to update the figure, and more than 200 people have been killed in the past five days, according to activists' reports.

Because of the surge in violence, the Arab League halted a month-old observer mission, which had already come under heavy criticism for failing to stop the crackdown. The league turned to the UN Security Council to throw its weight behind its peace plan, which Damascus has rejected.

The Arab League accepted today a request by Qatar to postpone its next meeting for two days and to hold it on February 7. Qatar will also host the meeting in its capital Doha, instead of Cairo.

Also today, army defectors gained full control of the central town of Rastan after days of intense clashes, according to a town activist who identified himself as Hassan.

The town was taken by defectors twice in the past only to be retaken by Syrian troops

Tropical storm Alex returns to kill 10

THE first major storm of the Atlantic season was entering the Gulf of Mexico today after unleashing landslides and floods that killed at least 10 people in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Overnight, Alex, which had been downgraded earlier to a tropical depression, strengthened and regained its tropical storm status.

At noon (AEST), Alex, which packed sustained winds of 75km/h, was entering the Gulf of Mexico some 100km west southwest of Campeche, Mexico, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

"Additional strengthening is forecast - and Alex could become a hurricane within the next 48 hours," the NHC said.

Although it was not due to directly hit the massive BP oil spill off the southern US state of Louisiana, the storm could still generate waves that would hamper clean-up and containment efforts.

Officials in Nicaragua told AFP the bodies of six people had been found in or around the northern city of Esteli, swept to their deaths by torrents from the swollen San Lucas river.

In eastern El Salvador, on Central America's Pacific coast, two people drowned when they were carried away by strong currents near San Miguel, while more than 500 people were evacuated to shelters from high-risk areas.

In western Guatemala, two farmers working on a road improvement project were buried and killed by a rain-triggered landslide, the national emergency agency Conred reported.

Forecasters said the storm was expected to dump a total of 10-20cm of rain over the Yucatan Peninsula, southern Mexico and Guatemala bythis afternoon.

Up to 38cm of rain were possible in mountainous areas and forecasters warned of "life-threatening flash floods and mudslides".

Central America was slammed last month by Tropical Storm Agatha, which roared ashore into Guatemala from the Pacific, unleashing heavy rains and floods that left some 275 people dead or missing.

The NHC's long-term forecast has the storm heading over the Gulf of Mexico in the direction of the US-Mexico border, but with a possibility of waves and winds generated by the storm affecting the site of the huge oil slick unleashed by the April 20 explosion of the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig.

But a forecaster at the NHC downplayed a direct hit on the oil cleanup area.

"The storm is not an issue for the spill," said NHC spokesman Dennis Feltgen.

Indonesia visit will happen, says Obama

UNITED States President Barack Obama says his twice delayed trip to Indonesia is going to happen.

His trip to the most populous Muslim nation is tied with a trip to Australia but he made no specific mention of Australia.

Domestic emergencies including the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill have kept Mr Obama from visiting previously.

Mr Obama held a bilateral meeting with Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on the sidelines of Toronto's G20 meeting.

"Because of the crisis that we've had in the Gulf, I've had to delay the trip," Mr Obama told reporters at G20.

"But graciously, for a second time now, the president has re-extended the invitation, and I am confident that we are going to get there."

Rolling Stones Urinals -- Pissing Off German Women

0130_kiss_urinals_bn

The famous mouth-shaped urinals in a Rolling Stones memorabilia museum in Germany are in hot water ? after a several women complained the pee receptacles are demeaning to females.

According to German reports, roughly 12 women have complained about the urinals ? calling for their removal.

One angry lady claims her beef stems from the tongue ? or lack thereof ? saying, ?If it had been based on the emblem of the Stones with the tongue, it would have been OK. But the tongue's been left out and they really looks like women's mouths."

For the record, the urinals have been stirring up controversy for years ? Virgin Airlines scrapped plans to install a pair at JFK airport in 2004. It?s unclear if they were modeled directly after the famous Stones logo.

Despite the pushback, the owner of the museum says he won?t budge ? saying, ?They were damned expensive and they're staying where they are ? That's final."

  • Brad and Ange prevent kids from googling them
  • Parental blocks installed on all home computers
  • Celeb couple unfazed by what is written about them

THEY'RE one of the most talked about couples in the world, but to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's six children, their parents don't exist on the internet.

The Moneyball actor says he and Jolie have gone to great lengths to protect their enormous brood from uncovering any information on their famous mum and dad.

"On all the kids' computers we had our names blocked," the Moneyball actor told German magazine, Bild.

"They can't google their mum and dad. I don't want to make myself dependent on what other people think."

Despite the fact that a Google search of arguably Hollywood's most famous couple would produce millions of results, Pitt notes that he and Jolie don't even batter an eyelid these days. "We don't even notice all the noise," he said.

The pair - who are said to be considering tying the knot - have six children together: Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 5, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 3.

Google and Apple's 'secret anti-poaching deal'

Google Hacking Attack

Google is one many companies mentioned in the lawsuit. Picture: AP Source: AP

IN SILICON Valley's white-hot competition for tech talent, programmers can face a daily barrage of calls from recruiters seeking to woo them to rival companies with offers of better pay and perks.

But workers for some of the biggest names in the business claim their phones fell silent because of a conspiracy among their employers. And they claim the world's biggest tech icon was at the centre.

A lawsuit filed in federal court in San Jose claims senior executives at Google Inc., Intel Corp., Adobe Systems Inc., Intuit Inc., Lucasfilm Ltd., Pixar and Apple Inc. violated antitrust laws by entering into secret anti-poaching agreements not to hire each other's best workers. In doing so, the suit contends the companies were able to keep wages artificially low by preventing bidding wars for the best employees.

The plaintiffs also claim that company emails show Steve Jobs himself sought and orchestrated at least some of the so-called "gentlemen's agreements" while Apple's CEO.

"I believe we have a policy of no recruiting from Apple," then-Google chief executive Eric Schmidt wrote in a 2007 email cited by the plaintiffs. The email was originally furnished to the US Justice Department, which investigated similar allegations in 2010. The same email included a forwarded message from Jobs complaining that Google's recruiting department was trying to lure away an Apple engineer.

"Can you get this stopped and let me know why this is happening?" Schmidt wrote. Google's director of staffing replied that the recruiter "will be terminated within the hour."

The companies' attorneys said the facts even as presented by the plaintiffs show no evidence of a conspiracy.

Rather, they said in court filings that some companies had separate one-to-one pacts among themselves as they worked together on various business ventures.

"The obvious explanation for the existence of these agreements were the collaborations," said Apple defence attorney George Riley, as the two sides squared off Thursday in US District Court in San Jose. Riley told Judge Lucy Koh that such arrangements were common.

The case hinges on a practice described in court documents as "cold-calling". Under the practice, recruiters from one company will call an employee at another company who has the skills the company needs. The practice can lead to bidding wars as workers play the companies off one another to get the highest pay.

Cold-calling, the suit contends, helps workers get a sense of what they're worth in a free market for employment in which all the companies are competing against one another for top employees. When the cold-calling stops, workers lose the knowledge and the leverage they could otherwise use to demand higher pay.

The Justice Department's 2010 investigation included all the same companies except Lucasfilm, and the plaintiffs in some ways mimic the language from the department's original case. The companies settled without admitting any wrongdoing but agreed not to enter into future agreements preventing them from cold-calling each other's employees to recruit them.

Because the Justice Department's case was settled quietly without any public dispute, court records contain little detail about any specific alleged agreements among companies.

Some of those details did come to light, however, in a recent filing by the plaintiffs, which quotes emails they obtained from the companies that had previously been given to the Justice Department.

In a 2005 email describing a purported agreement between former Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen and his then-counterpart at Apple, an Adobe human resources executive wrote: "Bruce and Steve Jobs have an agreement that we are not to solicit ANY Apple employees, and vice versa," according to court documents.

Ex-Palm Inc. CEO Ed Colligan wrote to Jobs in 2007: "Your proposal that we agree that neither company will hire the other's employees, regardless of the individual's desires, is not only wrong, it is likely illegal," the plaintiffs' filing said.

In internal company communications, Intel CEO and Google board member Paul Otellini described a gentlemen's agreement between the two companies: "Let me clarify. We have nothing signed. We have a handshake 'no recruit'" between himself and then-Google CEO Schmidt. "I would not like this broadly known."

Defence attorneys contend the emails are being distorted by the plaintiffs and show nothing beyond legitimate one-to-one agreements. Apple declined to comment.

"Intel disagrees with the allegations contained in the private litigation related to recruiting practices and plans to conduct a vigorous defence," said Sumner Lemon, an Intel spokesman.

Adobe said the company does not comment on pending litigation.

The other companies named in the lawsuit did not immediately respond to requests seeking comment.

Whichever side prevails, the case underscores the high wages talented tech workers can command in Silicon Valley, where the tech industry added thousands of jobs last year. According to federal labor statistics, mid-level tech workers in the region such as computer security specialists, web developers and network architects earn more money than anywhere else in the country, with average annual salaries topping $110,000.

Many of those workers could get thousands more if the case goes their way, lead plaintiff's attorney Joseph Saveri said. Given the potentially tens of thousands of workers affected if the plaintiffs succeed in turning the suit into a class-action case, Saveri said the combined damages for the companies could reach into the hundreds of millions of dollars if decided at trial.

Such penalties would sink many companies. But Apple recently reported cash reserves of more than $97 billion. Google also has billions in cash on hand.

One anti-trust attorney not involved in the case doubts the companies have much to worry about anyway.

Antitrust cases that revolve around hiring practices are difficult to win, said David Balto, a Washington, DC-based antitrust lawyer who investigated Microsoft as a staff attorney for the Federal Trade Commission in the 1990s. Among the legal challenges they face is defining who exactly makes up the class of workers harmed by the alleged violations, since people with different jobs have different employment options, he said.

"I don't think anybody at these companies is losing a nanosecond of sleep because of this lawsuit," Balto said.

Andy Carroll: Linked with a swap deal for Manchester City's Carlos Tevez

Sky Bet

Liverpool's 35million striker, Andy Carroll, has in the past 12 months had no regrets about his record-breaking move to Anfield and is determined to make a success of his career.

The most expensive British footballer in history has been the subject of intense speculation after a tough first year on Merseyside.

Having been linked with a return to former club Newcastle, reports emerged late on Saturday night that he had been offered to Manchester City in a swap deal with Carlos Tevez.

Liverpool have refused to comment on the story, insisting they never do on transfer speculation, and Carroll has stressed his head has not been turned by talk about moves elsewhere.

"Not at all," he said when asked whether there was any point in the last year when he had regretted his move to Merseyside.

Shock

"The club has been great with me and everyone outside the club has been fantastic and I am enjoying it down here.

"Everyone has backed me and helped us along the way. I have signed a contract here and this is the team I am playing for."

Carroll has been stoutly defended by manager Kenny Dalglish ever since his shock arrival on January deadline day last year.

However, injury affected the latter half of last season and he has not yet found his form - or a regular starting spot - with just six goals in 36 appearances for his new club.

But he played a key part for both goals in Saturday's 2-1 FA Cup fourth-round win over arch-rivals Manchester United at Anfield.

Help

For Daniel Agger's header he was the main distraction for goalkeeper David de Gea, who failed to get anywhere near Steven Gerrard's corner, while his flick-on sent Dirk Kuyt through for the winner with two minutes remaining after Park Ji-Sung had equalised shortly before half-time.

"I thought I had done well and everyone else did, but I've got to keep working on it and it will come," admitted Carroll.

"I am just getting into my stride now. Everyone is getting used to how I play and I am getting used to everyone else.

"Everyone is helping us as much as they can and I just need to get going.

"I thought everyone played well and we deserved the win really. Everyone put a shift in and got what we wanted out of it at the end.

"Obviously it was nice to get an assist, but it doesn't really matter who sets them up or scores them really, as long as we get through like we did with everyone playing well.

"Manchester United came here and all the lads were buzzing for this game and it showed as everyone was up for it and we got the result we wanted."

Ligue 1 round-up

Goal joy: Christian Kinkela scored a last-minute winner as AC Ajaccio won at Valenciennes

Christian Kinkela scored a last-minute winner as AC Ajaccio's superb mid-season form in Ligue 1 continued on Sunday, while Marseille came from behind to beat Rennes.

In the late kick-off, Benoit Cheyrou hit the winner as Marseille came from a goal down to win 2-1 at Rennes.

Tongo Hamed Doumbia had given Rennes the lead (14), but Onyekachi Apam put through his own goal a minute before the break.

That set the stage for Cheyrou to score with 13 minutes left, putting Marseille up into fifth and ahead of their hosts.

Earlier, in-form AC Ajaccio claimed a 2-1 victory at Valenciennes to lift them out of the relegation zone.

Marooned at the bottom of the table following their summer promotion, an immediate return to Ligue 2 looked a certainty for Olivier Pantaloni's men ahead of the winter break.

But this fourth straight win - and their fifth game without defeat - has seen them reach 21 points and climb to 15th in the table, putting them ahead of their opponents on Sunday.

Eduardo scored their first goal after six minutes but, when Vincent Aboubakar levelled and Ajaccio had Paul Lasne sent off, a defeat looked a stark possibility.

But Kinkela had other ideas, scoring in injury time to give his side a vital three points.

Evian were left to rue Yannick Sagbo's penalty miss as they played out a goalless draw with Bordeaux.

Sagbo's spot-kick was saved by Cedric Carrasso midway through the second half in the game's key moment as both sides struggled to create chances.

Bordeaux's scoring deficiencies were exposed again as they remained four points ahead of their opponents and closer to the relegation zone than the Europa League.

Emily Scott

SHE has appeared in countless men's magazines and is a reality television show favourite in Australia and Britain but glamour model Emily Scott is fuming at her latest starring role - as bait to fraudulently lure customers to an Adelaide bikini massage parlour.

The London-based Aussie is considering taking legal action against Bikini Girls massage parlour over its advertising her as "Jess" - a masseuse who offers massages for between $79 and $270 - on crude, photocopied flyers.

Scott's image, lifted from a photograph on the cover of men's magazine Zoo Weekly dating back to January 2007, is among several images of women on the flyer depicted as employees of the massage parlour, run by serial conman Bon Levi.

When the Sunday Mail phoned Bikini Girls to inquire about "Jess" during the week, a female receptionist politely said she would be "starting work at 6 o'clock so come in then".

Scott's Australian-based manager, Pete Sofo, said his model client was taking the issue "very, very seriously".

"Obviously using Emily's image is completely misleading and inappropriate. We have our legal team looking into all of our options," Mr Sofo said.

Scott, 27, who mixes modelling with her new career as a DJ, has appeared on Dancing With The Stars in 2009 and two months ago was among contestants in I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.

In 2008 she was briefly married to former Five boy band member Ritchie Neville.

Levi, also known as "Ron the Con" Frederick, has used at least 14 aliases in his life, has spent time in Australian and US prisons and was fined last year for numerous breaches of the Fair Trading Act.

He was found to have run misleading advertisements for men and women to work in his Perth "health salon", which failed to mention employees would have to massage naked men and work mostly naked.

An employee at Bikini Girls said yesterday Levi was holidaying in New Zealand and could not be contacted.

Acting deputy Consumer Affairs commissioner Dini Soulio said Levi could have committed an offence under Australian consumer law if he had "misrepresented services" or engaged in "deceptive or misleading conduct".

Mr Soulio said legislation prohibited the office from revealing whether complaints had been made against Bikini Girls and that it was not up to Consumer Affairs to instigate action against the business.

"The models would need to obtain their own legal advice about options that are available to them," he said.

Levi's guerrilla-style advertising campaign for his Port Rd parlour led to more than 100 of the risque flyers showing Scott and other scantily clad models being strewn along the Henley Beach Esplanade this week as families enjoyed their last week of school holidays.

Charles Sturt Council chief executive Mark Withers said the council was disappointed the flyers had been littered along the beachfront.

"Litter affects the look and feel of these areas, and endangers our environment, and flyers of this nature littered across public areas is not appropriate," he said.

FBI helping hunt for woman missing in Nepal

THE FBI says it's helping the US State Department in the investigation of a Colorado woman who disappeared while trekking alone in Nepal.

Denver FBI spokesman Dave Joly said today the agency was also working with Nepalese authorities on the disappearance of 23-year-old Aubrey Sacco of Greeley.

Ms Saccohas notbeen heard from since April 20, when she e-mailed her parents from Nepal. She planned to finish her trip around April 30.

Her father, Paul Sacco, told the Greeley Tribune that FBI agents had made two or three visits to his home.

Paul Sacco went to Nepal in May to look for his daughter.

He said he recovered her laptop computer and journal from a hotel.

Aubrey Sacco graduated from the University of Colorado last year.

Have you gotten an email with a photograph of bowling lanes with President Barack Obama's face at the end, where the pins are set up to look like his teeth?

It was supposedly taken at a bowling alley in Clearwater, Florida in the US and it shows the President's face at the end of each lane. The pins are right where his teeth would be.

According to the email, the bowling alley is doing record business because everyone is lining up for the chance to knock the president's teeth out.

About 200 people have called Countryside Lanes bowling alley because of the photo, inquiring from coast to coast, from California to Maine. And everyone hears the same answer: That photo is big, fat hoax.

"At first I thought it was a joke, one of my buddies prank calling me," said Joseph May from Countryside Lanes.

General manager Tina May said she had to do a bit of research to understand the question from the callers.

"I ended up going on Facebook, and lo and behold, there was a picture of Obama Bowl," she said.

Co-owner Joseph May said every caller gets the same response.

"We just tell them it's nothing serious, just some chain link email internet rumor going around," he said.

The Mays said they are are not happy to be associated with the Obama hoax.

"My personal opinion is it's a very disrespectful thing. I didn't approve of it at all and that was basically what I told people, no we don't do that and I don't know many around here who would," said Tina May.

EHL: Wins for top trio

Belfast Giants: Table toppers win again

Sky Bet

The top three in the Elite League all recorded victories on Saturday night with leaders Belfast 3-0 winners at the Fife Flyers.

Second-placed Nottingham Panthers were also convincing victors as they comfortably beat the visiting Coventry Blaze 6-1.

The Panthers took the lead after just 77 seconds when Jordan Fox hit the net before Guillaume Lepine and the Blaze's Bryan Jurynec renewed their rivalry with their third fight of the season just moments later.

Neil Francis and David Clarke scored on the powerplay and Matt Myers added another before James Griffin finally got the Blaze on the scoreboard with three minutes left.

David Beauregard scored 57 seconds later to seal a fine win for Nottingham and a miserable Saturday evening for the Blaze.

Steelers keep pace

Third-placed Sheffield Steelers, who games in hand on the leaders, kept in touch with a 4-2 win at Edinburgh Capitals.

There was an all-Scottish clash in the Elite League and it was the Braehead Clan won their battle north of the border as they defeat the Dundee Stars 5-4.

A five-goal burst in the second period gave Cardiff Devils an entertaining 8-5 victory over Hull Stingrays in a goal fest.

Ben Davies scored the only goal of the first period before the game exploded into life in the second, with Cardiff netting two early on through Kenton Smith and Scott Matzka.

The assault continued as the Devils struck another two goals inside a minute with short-handed strikes from Stuart MacRae and Scott Dobben making if 5-0 to the Welsh side.

Onslaught

Hull managed to clear their heads and they got on the board when Jereme Tendler hit his 30th goal of the season, but Cardiff hit right back with Chris Frank adding a sixth in the dying seconds of the period.

The Stingrays replaced beleaguered netminder Christian Boucher with Andy Brummitt at the start of the third period, and they grabbed another goal back when Tendler netted again inside the first minute to make it 6-2.

Any hope of a comeback was rubbed out though with another two-goal blast from Cardiff sealing the points as Jeff Pierce and player-coach Gerad Adams made it 8-2.

Dominic Osman did give the Stingrays some respectability as he scored a late hat-trick to make if a final score of 8-5 as Hull won the final period 4-2.

"Guys have to learn they cannot just switch it on when they want - they must play for 60 minutes," said Hull player-coach Sylvain Cloutier. "We played a decent first period, a terrible second and did well in the last 10 minutes - but it is not good enough."

Frampton knocks out Hughes

Image text here

Carl Frampton: Won every round against Hughes (leighdawneyphotography.com)

Sky Bet

Carl Frampton stopped Kris Hughes in the seventh round to successfully defend his Commonwealth super-bantamweight title at York Hall.

The man from Belfast, who is being guided by Barry McGuigan, won every round against a much taller man who had little to offer in the form of attack.

Frampton, who has been talked up as an opponent for British champion Scott Quigg later this year, showed plenty of variety as he broke down Hughes piece by piece.

His tactics worked from the outset, repeatedly drawing Hughes' right hand lead before countering with a right of his own.

Hughes tried to work behind a long raking jab but when he did come into range he seemed unable to offload a combination likely to trouble the much smaller man.

The 'Jackal' worked the body early in the third with the left hook clearly having an effect on his opponent.

No impact

And the Scot, with a solitary stoppage in 15 previous wins, simply didn't have the power to effect Frampton's work-rate, the Belfast man continuing to dictate the pace in the fourth session.

To his credit Hughes soaked up all the early pressure, hoping for Frampton to tire in the second half of the fight. But with the challenger unable to have much impact with his own shots, the champion continued to pour forward.

However, Hughes proved difficult to catch cleanly and it started to become a frustrating night for the champion, who came into the fight wanting to impress the York Hall crowd.

The Scot came out positively in the seventh, looking to land some stylish combinations, but the finish Frampton was looking for came shortly afterwards, a huge right hand catching the brave challenger flush on the chin, leaving him in no state to continue.

"He was very very tough, he took a lot of hard shots from the start," he told Sky Sports. "After about two rounds I was sinking some body shots into him but he stood up to it well.

"It took something spectacular to get rid of him and I'm happy with the performance.

"I was going to take my time and up the pace when I felt like it and I trained very hard for this and knew I could do 12 rounds flat out.

"I threw the right hand a few seconds before that just missed, I decided to throw it again and it was a perfect shot - I don't think anyone would have stood up to that."

Costa Concordia death toll reaches 17

DIVERS on Saturday found the body of a woman while searching the wrecked Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia, the 17th victim to be found.

The woman found was a crew member, indicated by the uniform she was wearing, the BBC reported. Further details of her identity or nationality have yet to be released.

The death toll increased just a day after a handful of rescued passengers filed a lawsuit against the Italian cruise line.

Divers have been scouring the site since the massive liner hit rocks and rolled onto its side near an island off of Italy's Tuscan coast on January 13, with more than 4,200 people aboard.

Fifteen people still remain missing.

On Friday, Carnival Corp, the largest cruise line owner in the world, was sued over the Costa Concordia wreckage. The complaint was filed in Miami, naming six plaintiffs, four Americans and two Italians, according to lawyer Marc J. Bern.

The complaint wrote the plaintiffs were "in terror of catastrophic injury, death, drowning, having been placed in a situation where common sense said the vessel was sinking but the orders from the crew were to return to their cabins," Bloomberg reported.

Bern, who is working with an Italian consumer-law group, Codacons, expects to later sue on behalf of 1,000 Costa Concordia passengers.

Salvage crews have postponed pumping 2,400 tonnes of fuel from the ship's tanks until at least Tuesday due to weather conditions. It was expected to start on Saturday.

"We were ready this morning [Saturday] to commence oil pumping in the course of the day," said Martijn Schuttevaer, spokesman for Smit, Dutch salvage company.

"Unfortunately the weather had turned in our disadvantage as it deteriorated and therefore towards the end of the morning we had to demobilise our vessel, the Moloria, back from the side of the ship back into the port here."

It could take about four weeks to complete the process of removing the fuel. Some fear that the postponement could lead to a leak, which would cause an environmental disaster in the marine national park where the ship was capsized.

The Costa Concordia is lying on its side off Giglio island, where it hit rocks at the start of a Mediterranean cruise.

The captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest while his actions are being investigated. He is accused of multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and abandoning ship before all passengers were evacuated. He denies the allegations.

Police save woman from death on train tracks

  • Woman drives onto train tracks, gets stuck
  • Police drag her from the car before train hits
  • Police arrest the woman for DUI

POLICE on Long Island pulled a woman from a car stuck on tracks just moments before a train slammed into the vehicle.

The woman was driving a Volkswagen Jetta south on Brentwood Road at 5pmlocal time yesterday when she mistakenly turned onto the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) tracks in Bay Shore, Suffolk County police said.

The car got stuck, and she unsuccessfully tried to dislodge the car.

Officers Christopher Palazzo and Jereme Matthews arrived at the scene, called dispatch to stop the train and cleared people from the area, police said.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said the train was too close to stop, so the officers pulled the woman out of her car, and the three of them ran from the tracks just as the train crashed into the car, police said.

Although the car went flying across the tracks, no one was hurt on the ground or in the train, police said.

Police then arrested the driver of the Jetta for driving under the influence, authorities said.

'Red Shirt' to run for Thai government

A THAI protest leader accused of terrorism was released from prison briefly to apply to run in a by-election seen as a key test of the opposition's prospects of success in nationwide polls.

Kokaew Pikulthong, a senior "Red Shirt" involved in the mass rally in Bangkok that ended last month, will stand against incumbent Panich Vikitsreth of the ruling Democrat Party in the July 25 vote in the capital.

A Thai court last week granted permission for Kokaew, the candidate of the main opposition Puea Thai Party, to be released temporarily from Bangkok Remand Prison to register to challenge Panich, a vice foreign minister.

Mr Kokaew, who has not been convicted of any crimes relating to his role in the two-month-long street protest, was later returned to detention, but is expected to seek permission to be released again to campaign for votes.

The Red Shirts' rally, which at its peak attracted up to about 100,000 people demanding immediate elections, sparked outbreaks of violence that left 90 people dead, mostly civilians, and nearly 1900 injured.

Enraged protesters set fire to dozens of major buildings after the army crushed the demonstration by the mostly poor and working class Reds with an assault on their vast fortified encampment in central Bangkok on May 19.

The Red Shirts were campaigning for elections they hoped would oust the government, which they view as undemocratic because it came to power with the backing of the army after a court ruling threw out the previous administration.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva proposed November polls in a bid to end the crippling protests, but shelved the plan because the Reds -- many of whom seek the return of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra -- refused to disperse.

Mr Abhisit, whose government was elected by parliamentary vote in 2008 and enjoys support among the Bangkok-based elite, must call nationwide elections by the end of next year at the latest.

Many of the Red Shirt leaders are in jail facing terrorism charges for their roles in the unrest. The government has rejected the opposition's call for a state of emergency to be lifted in the capital for the by-election.

Gotye tops Triple J's Hottest 100 countdown

Gotye

Gotye had the shortest odds in Hottest 100 history. Picture: Nic Gibson Source: The Daily Telegraph

MELBOURNE musician Gotye has topped this year's Triple J's Hottest 100.

His break-up ode, Somebody That I Used to Know, was the unbackable favorite by everyone from music fans to bookmakers.

The duet with New Zealand singer Kimbra was the highest-selling Australian song of last year.

Gotye, aka Wally De Backer, is back in Melbourne before embarking on a sellout US tour next month.

Somebody That I Used to Know is No.58 in the US this week and No.21 in the UK.

The video has had over 50 million views on YouTube.

Gotye's success complemented another Australian-heavy list.

While commercial radio avoids homegrown talent, Triple J listeners voted 10 songs into the Top 20 of the Hottest 100.

Sydney folk band Boy & Bear scored four songs in the Hottest 100, completing an impressive year since the release of their ARIA winning debut Moonfire.

British band The Wombats had four songs in the Top 100, US band Foster the People had three placings.

While their No.1 hit Pumped Up Kicks made No.32 in the 2011 Hottest 100 (it was released in 2010),a cover of the song by Owl Eyes made No.28 this year.

The Hottest 100 showed the impact Triple J's Unearthed program continues to have.

Unearthed, which now has its own devoted radio station, discovered Perth teenagers San Cisco, whose Awkward was a surprise inclusion at No.7.

Sydney's Matt Corby continued his meteoric rise after ejecting himself from the Australian Idol machine.

Corby's Brother, only released in November, made No.3.

Ironically Corby performed a cover of the No.2 track, US duo the Black Keys' Lonely Boy, on Triple J last week - missing out on eligibility for this year's Hottest 100.

The Black Keys' track was another late contender, only released in November.

The countdown, the biggest music poll in the world, received a remarkable 1,378,869 votes this year.

This year saw US band Foo Fighters eclipse the now defunct Powderfinger to have the most songs surfacing in Hottest 100 countdowns since they began.

Brockovich probes mystery high school illness

Erin Brockovich

ErinBrockovich, who was famously depicted by Julia Roberts in a movie about the activist's work, believes more research needs to be done on environmental factors that may have caused the mystery condition. Picture: Colin Murty

ENVIRONMENTAL activist Erin Brockovich is investigating a mystery Tourette's-like illness, which has struck down at least 15 students at the same high school in New York state, causing distressing verbal outbursts and involuntary twitches.

Reports of teenagers at Le Roy High School, N.Y. displaying Tourette's-like symptoms first surfaced in November last year and now 15 students claim they have the condition, The Democrat and Chronicle reported today.

Neurologists claim the students are suffering from mass psychogenic illness -- a psychological disorder that has spread through the student population unconsciously.

But Brockovich, who was famously depicted by Julia Roberts in a movie about the activist's work on a California water-contamination case, believes more research needs to be done on environmental factors that may have caused the mystery condition.

"While we don't have the answers, we are suspicious that the all-clear has been sounded on the environmental side and we don't believe that it should have been," Brockovich, who is sending an associate to LeRoy to gather samples, told the newspaper.

Environmentalists want to look into whether five natural gas wells surrounding the school, which recently underwent a fracturing procedure, may have triggered the illness.

There are also rumours that the school is built upon rock and soil contaminated by a toxic spill caused by a 1970 train derailment, although the US Environmental Protection Agency said it has no knowledge of this.

One of the teenagers affected, Chelsey Dumars, 16, told WGRZ-TV she was frustrated with the mystery condition and wanted answers.

Talking about the tics that plague her all day long, she said, "I hate it when it happens ... my body's sore. Sometimes it gets me to the point I want to cry from twitching so much."

"How can you send your child to school perfectly normal and a couple of hours later you're picking her up in this condition?" Chelsey's father Dave Watson asked the station. "Whether it's environmental, or whatever's going on we have to find the answer."

Martin Bustos Moyano: Personal haul of 26 points

Sky Bet

Montpellier put themselves back in contention for the Top 14 play-offs with a 38-6 victory over Stade Francais on Friday night.

Winger Martin Bustos Moyano was the star of the show with a 26-point haul that propelled the hosts to their third successive league victory.

Centre Paul Bosch and winger Timoci Nagusa both touched down to help ensure a valuable bonus point with replacement Benoit Paillaugue rounding out the scoring with a last-minute conversion.

Stade Francais, who returned to domestic matters having booked a place in this season's Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-finals, took the lead in the first half through the boot of scrum-half Julien Dupuy.

However, the visitors had little answer to Montpellier's second-half onslaught with a second penalty all they could muster after the interval.

Global action on cybercrime needed: UN

  • Hackers "no longer mischievous individuals"
  • Many countries lack cyber crime laws
  • Public/private partnership needed, experts say

INTERNATIONAL action to snuff out cybercrime is desperately needed, officials and business leaders say, warning that criminals move at internet speed while countries drag their feet.

Many hackers are no longer just mischievous individuals.

Instead well-funded organisations do it for profit, along with spies and terrorists, but many governments are struggling to fight it.

"Many countries don't have laws to criminalise cyber crime; they don't have means and tools to investigate, to share information,'' said Yury Fedotov, who heads the United Nations office on drugs and crime.

Cybercrime is "interconnected in terms of crime, but not interconnected in collaboration'' against it, he said on Thursday, noting there isn't even an agreement on what constitutes cybercrime.

Fedotov said his greatest wish would be "to get a clear definition of cybercrime - to be clear about what should be rejected by member states and what should be allowed.''

"Criminals move at the speed of internet and countries move at speed of democracy - that's the discrepancy,'' warned Moises Naim, senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

In one of the major recent attacks in January, a hacker brought down the websites of Israel's national carrier El Al and the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange.

It marked the latest incident in a series of attacks only days into 2012, which saw details of tens of thousands of Israeli credit cards posted online and websites defaced by hackers claiming to be from Saudi Arabia or Gaza.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a spokesman for Gaza's Hamas rulers, has hailed the action, describing it as "a sign of the Arab youth's creativity in inventing new forms of Arab and Islamic resistance against the Israeli occupation''.

The Israeli market was not the only one subject to such attacks.

US exchange Nasdaq's general counsellor, Edward Knight, told delegates in Davos the world's largest exchange company is also "subject to constant attacks, a million or more ... intrusions into our systems''.

He complained that there is no clarity on "where is public responsibility and where is private responsibility'' on clamping down on such crime.

Unlike real world attacks, the private sector is required to provide its own defence system, even if virtual attacks are coming from foreign governments.

Kevin Johnson, chief executive officer at the US-based internet infrastructure provider Juniper Networks, urged state authorities to work with private organisations to clamp down on such crime.

"The challenge is that the internet is a global resource but there are no geographic boundaries on the internet, yet laws are established by nation states, they are established by geography,'' he said.

"One recommendation is any solution... is going to require a much higher degree of public/private partnership,'' Johnson stressed.

Europol Director Rob Wainwright also told the forum of a "sophisticated digital underground economy'' in which data like bank account details and passwords are traded.

"Legislation should be harmonised to make cross-border investigation easier, and companies and members of the public should know where and how to report crime online.

"Furthermore we have to develop a collective enforcement approach with industry,'' said the head of the European law enforcement agency.
