Edward Furlong -- Released from Jail ... Looking Like Death

1031_edward_furlong_released_launch_2Edward Furlong was released from an L.A. jail last night following his domestic violence arrest -- and he looked like a harbinger of death on his way out, wearing a Halloween-appropriate skull t-shirt.

The troubled "Terminator 2" starwas released around 6:30 PM on $50,000 bail.

TMZ broke the story, Furlong was busted early yesterday morning at LAX for allegedly getting physical with his girlfriend during an argument.

Law enforcement sources tell us, police observed marks on Furlong's GF's arm ... and that's why they placed him under arrest.

Officials will now decide whether to press criminal charges against the actor.

Carr welcomes lawyer's release

Foreign Minister Bob Carr has confirmed Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor is set to be released by 9pm Monday AEST.

Detained Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor has finally been allowed to make contact with her family.

UPDATE: THE federal government has welcomed news Libyan authorities are expected to release Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor later today.

A spokesman for Foreign Minister Bob Carr said "all going well" the International Criminal Court lawyer will be released into the custody of Australian officials tonight and will board a plane bound for Europe by midnight.

"We welcome the news that she is likely to be released today," the spokesman told AAP from New York.

"We thank the Libyan authorities for their cooperation."

Australia also thanks the wider international community for their help and support, the spokesman said.

Ms Taylor is likely to be taken to Rome before her onward journey to her home in The Hague.

Ms Taylor, along with three of her ICC colleagues, was detained in the Libyan city of Zintan on June 7 while representing Seif al-Islam, the son of the former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Libyan officials said she was found carrying documents for Seif that were judged a threat to national security.

Senator Carr has lobbied hard for her release, even visiting the Libyan capital Tripoli last month to press her case.

Ms Taylor was not able to speak to her husband and young daughter until last week.

Senator Carr said Ms Taylor was permitted to call her home in The Hague shortly after a visit by Australia's ambassador David Ritchie.

Mr Carr subsequently spoke to Ms Taylor's Brisbane-based parents John and Janelle, who were relieved to hear she was finally allowed a phone call.

Her parents had pleaded with Libya to release their daughter in time for her toddler's third birthday in July.

The three other detained ICC staffers are from Lebanon, Russia and Spain.

Mr Carr said a week ago that talks in The Hague between the ICC and the Libyan authorities had resulted in "the ICC expressing regret, effectively an apology for any misunderstandings".

The ICC has stopped short of admitting to any wrongdoing but has said it will fully investigate its team's behaviour upon their return.

"When the ICC has completed its investigation, the Court will ensure that anyone found responsible for any misconduct will be subject to appropriate sanctions," it added in a statement issued last month.

The ICC wants to try Seif al-Islam, 39, for crimes against humanity during his father's rule, which came to an abrupt end last year.

Tripoli insists he should be tried locally and filed on May 1 a motion challenging the ICC's jurisdiction to put him on trial in The Hague.

Australian man successfully sues Google

Tony Mokbel

An Australian man has successfully sued Google after his image was posted next to gangland figures including drug baron Tony Mokbel, pictured. Source: Herald Sun

AN Australian man has won a landmark defamation case against Google after images of him were published alongside gangland figures including drug baron Tony Mokbel.

The man - who has lived in Australia for 42 years also claimed that a Google search for his name brought up stories about an unsolved shooting in 2004, causing damage to his reputation leading him to be ostracised within his migrant community.

A jury found Google liable for defamation in the Victorian Supreme court yesterday - a first in Australian history.

Google argued in court that it was not a publisher and therefore could not be held responsible.

Its search processes were automated and based on algorithms that crawl the web for content, Google said.

The jury had to deliberate on two separate issues: the first was the publication of a photo of the man that appeared on Google's image search.

The second had to do with a URL that appeared on Google's web search that linked to a web page containing the defamatory content, which included the man's image.

The jury found that Google was able to rely on the defence of "innocent dissemination" up until 2009 when the man's solicitors contacted Google to have the image removed.

However, it found that when it came to the URL, the man did not follow the proper process of reporting offensive content by Google - which can be achieved by filling out a form on its website and that Google was therefore not liable.

In a damages hearing this morning, Google argued that it could not be a publisher as a matter of law as search engine operators are "active intermediaries", but Justice Beach of the Victorian Supreme Court rejected Google's argument.

Justice Beach reserved judgement on damages and expects to deliver that ruling on Monday.

The man told News Ltd that he was pleased by the decision.

"This has been a big long battle I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy," he said.

"I've lived in Australia (for) 41 years. This case is not about money, it's about protecting my family, my children and reputation.''

The man said he has been shunned from local businesses that he has patronised for years.

"I used to go (to) a little restaurant every week. Now people won't talk to me," he said.

"Google needs to be held accountable."

Google declined to comment.

The ruling comes almost eight months after the man won a similar case against Yahoo! who was ordered by the Victorian Supreme Court to pay damages of $225,000.

Indonesia visit will happen, says Obama

UNITED States President Barack Obama says his twice delayed trip to Indonesia is going to happen.

His trip to the most populous Muslim nation is tied with a trip to Australia but he made no specific mention of Australia.

Domestic emergencies including the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill have kept Mr Obama from visiting previously.

Mr Obama held a bilateral meeting with Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on the sidelines of Toronto's G20 meeting.

"Because of the crisis that we've had in the Gulf, I've had to delay the trip," Mr Obama told reporters at G20.

"But graciously, for a second time now, the president has re-extended the invitation, and I am confident that we are going to get there."

HALLOWEEN HORRORS: Film's 5 scariest scenes

The Shining

Jack Nicholson and actress Shelley Duvall in scene from film 'The Shining'. Source: Sunday Mail (SA)

THERE'S a lot more to Halloween than trick or treating.

A proper Halloween tradition, perhaps for the adults more so than their sugar-loaded kids, is watching horror films.

And the scarier, the better.

IGN's Lucy O'Brien has put together a list of the 25 most disturbing scenes in horror, and here we look at the top five.

5. The Shining: The Girl in Room 237 (1980)

The horror in The Shining is unsettling rather than scream-inducing, and there's a hell of a lot of creepy Kubrick abstraction that could have made it onto this list. But it's hard to go past the lady in the bathtub, the monster in the forbidden Room 237. At first, a beautiful young woman in Jack Torrence's arms, and then, in a brilliant reveal reflected in the bathroom mirror, a rotting hag. The kicker? She's still got a hand resting on Jack's shoulder as she begins to cackle.

4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Grandpa (1974)

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is exhaustively horrific, a slaughter-fest so relentless it had critics at the time questioning the reasons for its existence (as Roger Ebert said, "it's...without any apparent purpose, unless the creation of disgust and fright is a purpose.") The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a movie of a different kind, not a gore film or psychological thriller but a slick, deeply cynical comic horror that didn't give a damn for the rules laid down by its predecessors. And amongst all the slicing and dicing there's a singular scene which, while not overly violent or gory, chills to the bone above all others: grandpa. The corpse-like geriatric's feeble attempts to bash in the head of a young girl is director Tobe Hooper firing on all cylinders; it's a scene both hilarious (grandpa's too old and can't lift the hammer) and disturbing (grandpa's too old and can't lift the hammer). It's repugnant, peppered with screaming, and it represents, quite simply, everything that makes The Texas Chainsaw Massacre so terrific.

3. Alien: Chestburster (1979)

The reason the chestburster scene in Ridley Scott's '79 sci-fi/horror Alien gets under one's skin isn't because it's gory (although there's no denying its blood-splattered shocks), it's because Scott has briefly put us at ease before pulling his diabolical rug from under us. It's easy to forget that the moment the alien bursts out of Kane's chest is part of one of the more cheerful scenes in Alien, the crew genuinely relaxed around one another, cracking jokes about the crummy food over dinner. How quickly it turns; Kane laughing and chowing down one minute, the next heaving for breath, a sudden burst of red down the middle of his white t-shirt. Upon reflection the whole thing was inevitable, but at the time it's shockingly unexpected.

2. Audition: Needles (1999)

Takashi Miike's '99 Japanese head-trip is a smorgasbord of skin-crawling horror, but nothing tops its infamous needle torture scene, a venus flytrap of a moment that snaps nastily upon the unprepared viewer. The scene, involving methodical insertion of needles and limb amputation, is the culmination of slow-burning psychological warfare launched upon its protagonist by the object of his affections. It's vicious, not least because of the joy the film's villainess is expressing; it's hard to dispel the sound of her voice whispering 'deeper, deeper,' as she gently inserts a 10-inch needle into the soft, raw flesh beneath his eyeball.

1. The Exorcist: The Crucifix Scene (1973)

Did your parents see William Friedkin's landmark horror The Exorcist back in the '70s? If you don't know the answer, ask them. If their reply is in the affirmative, they'll likely go on to tell you how the movie made them feel: drained, shaken, nauseous. They'll recall a culmination of horrific moments - the pea soup, the tests in the hospital, the head turning round 360 degrees. But the one part they probably won't mention - unless you have awesomely open and progressive parents - is the crucifix scene. It's a scene so shocking upon first viewing, both in concept and execution, that it touches a very deep and private part of the psyche. It has the power to unsettle even those of us desensitised from years of exposure to shocking or obscene imagery; those who laugh during the scene tend to laugh a little too loudly. Linda Blair, who played 12-year-old Regan McNeil, has since said she had no idea what the implications were behind her actions, that she was just doing what Friedkin told her.

For her, and the rest of us, it's better that way.

What are your favourite horror scenes? Please leave a comment.

NATO personnel gunned down

A MAN in an Afghan police uniform has gunned down three NATO personnel in the war-torn country's troubled south, the latest so-called "green on blue" attack.

The deaths take the toll this year in "green-on-blue" killings -- in which Afghan forces turn their weapons against their Western allies -- to at least 26, in a total of 18 such incidents.

In keeping with its usual policy, NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) gave few details of Sunday's incident and did not reveal the nationality of the victims.

"An individual wearing an Afghan National Civil Order Police uniform turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force service members in southern Afghanistan today, killing three service members," ISAF said in a statement.

An ISAF spokesman said the gunman was wounded and detained after the attack, which happened around 5pm (2230 AEST), and is now under investigation. The incident is not thought to have happened on an ISAF base, the spokesman said.

The spokesman added that ISAF was still investigating whether the attacker was a police officer or not.

The Afghan Civil Order Police was set up in 2006 as an elite riot control force.

The attack comes nearly two weeks after three men in Afghan police uniforms killed a soldier with the US-led force, also in the south.

An increasing number of Afghan troops have turned their weapons against NATO soldiers who are helping Kabul fight a decade-long insurgency by hardline Taliban Islamists.

Some of the assaults are claimed by the Taliban, who say they have infiltrated the ranks of Afghan security forces, but many are attributed to cultural differences and antagonism between the allied forces.

ISAF has taken several security measures in response to the shootings, including assigning "guardian angels" -- soldiers who watch over their comrades as they sleep.

NATO has around 130,000 soldiers fighting alongside some 350,000 Afghan security personnel against the Taliban-led insurgency, but they are due to pull out of the country in 2014.

The Western coalition is to hand over security to local forces by mid-2013 and will play a support role up to the final withdrawal by the end of the following year.

'Bird man' faces court for sitting in tree

A MAN in southwestern China who lived in a eucalyptus tree for more than three months to protest the planned demolition of his home is being tried for disturbing public order.

Chen Maoguo was dubbed the "bird man" for his tree-top sit-in last year in the Chongqing region, staged to protest what he considered inadequate compensation for the razing of his home, the Yunnan Information News said.

His home was one of many to be knocked down to make way for a shopping mall in Fengjie county.

However, his unusual protest beginning last August attracted crowds and media attention, leading to his arrest in November for disturbing public order, said the report, posted on the popular Chinese web portal Sina.com.

During his demonstration, Mr Chen pulled all of his food, water, clothing and other needs up by rope into the small makeshift shelter he constructed in a eucalyptus tree, it said.

The report said Mr Chen was to appear in a local court today. It did not say how old Mr Chen was, or what penalties he could face.

Land seizures, often involving corrupt officials and businesses eyeing real estate profits, have been a growing source of unrest in China.

The problem stirred an uproar last year as a property boom and resulting rash of mass evictions caused a number of violent clashes, protests and even suicides by stubborn homeowners.

Facebook posts lead to suspension

Steve McLuckie

Southport State High School Principal Steve McLuckie said students need to learn that posting abusive or offensive material online is unacceptable. Picture: Kate Czerny Source: Gold Coast Bulletin

A GOLD Coast high school has suspended students for posting abusive material on its Facebook page.

Southport High School Principal Steve McLuckie has told the Gold Coast Bulletin that he has suspended a number of students who posted offensive content on the Souhtport High Memes page.

?It is not a private page, this is a public page. The comments are inappropriate and will not be tolerated,? he said.

Mr McLuckie said several students had been suspended since the page was created on 23 August and children need to be educated about social media.

"We, as a society, do not put up with anyone putting people down and belittling them," he said.

"As a society we do not accept that, as we are trying to educate and train students to be a part of that society."

Parents have had mixed reactions to the controversial move to stamp out abusive behaviour outside school.

While some apologised for the online actions of their children, others had no idea their kids were posting offensive material on the internet.

One mother who asked not be named said the school was ?out of line? and the suspensions were inappropriate.

"They haven't done anything wrong. They have posted on a Facebook site - so what," she said.

"They have accessed the site in their own time. The school has no right to punish my children for what they do in their own time,? she said.

Read more about the school's controversial stance at The Gold Coast Bulletin.

Teen solo sailor heads home - by plane

US teen sailor Abby Sunderland was today on her way home to California - by plane, not boat.

Abby, 16, arrived on the French island of Reunion yesterday after being rescued by a fishing vessel 2000 nautical miles off the Western Australian coast earlier this month.

She began her attempt to sail solo around the world in January but became stranded in the Indian Ocean on June 10 after storms smashed the mast of her sailboat, Wild Eyes, knocking out satellite phone reception.

The near-disaster triggered a frantic international rescue effort.

Abby was greeted in Reunion, east of Madagascar, by her brother Zac, who became the first person under the age of 18 to sail solo around the world when he completed his voyage last July at the age of 17.

Her parents, Laurence and Marianne Sunderland, remained at home in Thousand Oaks, California, where Marianne will soon to give birth to the couple's eighth child.

The Sunderland family was criticised for allowing Abby to attempt the dangerous voyage, but the teen called the criticism toward them "unfair and offensive."

Speaking to the media after coming to shore Abby said she was "really disappointed that things didn't go as planned."

Abby said the wild weather "ended my trip, but it didn't end my dream", adding that she was looking forward to getting home to LA and seeing her dog again.

Abby will hold a press conferencetomorrow at 10amlocal time in southern California.

Sandy bears down on Crowe's Ark

Noah

About to get wet: Russell Crowe as Noah. Picture: Paramount Source: Supplied

A STORM of biblical proportions has halted production on Russell Crowe's Noah ark movie, which just goes to show that either God has a sense of humour or really hates Russell Crowe.

The Los Angeles Times reports that work was postponed as Hurricane Sandy bore down the New York sets and the two massive arks the production team have built for the movie.

Filming on Noah is almost complete so the stoppage won't harm the project.

Emma Watson, who co-stars in the film, tweeted: "I take it that the irony of a massive storm holding up the production of Noah is not lost" while director Darren Aronofsky decided to catch up on some movies, including Cloud Atlas and The Master.

Crowe, who plays the title character, used the time to reminisce about past holidays: "one persons random is another persons linear...1970 family holiday, drove to Queensland, straight into the teeth of a cyclone, good call Dad!"

He also joked: "Aren't butterflies just amazing?" and "Wind picking up outside".

Noah comes out in 2014.

Culkin 'falling apart' without Kunis

Macaulay Culkin, Mila Kunis

Happier times: Macaulay Culkin has been reportedly in a downward spiral since Mila Kunis broke up with him. Picture: Getty Images Source: Getty Images

MILA Kunis' ex-boyfriend Macaulay Culkin reportedly wants her to "give him another chance."

Mila, 29, and Macaulay, 32, dated for eight years before ending their romance in 2010.

The actress is now in a relationship with Ashton Kutcher, who is currently undergoing a divorce from Demi Moore.

Mila and Ashton appear to be going strong, but Macaulay seems to be struggling to let go of his former flame.

An onlooker saw the Home Alone star plead with Mila outside The Pavilion movie theatre in Brooklyn recently.

?[Macaulay was] begging Mila to give him another chance,? the witness told Star magazine.

?He was telling Mila he wants her to leave Ashton. And be with him. Macaulay told her his life is falling apart and that he can?t live without her. They were talking and hugging, Macaulay didn?t seem to be in very good shape. He was shaking and looked really thin and unhealthy.?

Reports from earlier this year said that Macaulay Culkin was battling an addiction to heroin and prescription painkillers, with friends worried that he would be dead within six months if he couldn?t pull out of it.

Reps for the actor contested these reports.

Apparently Ashton was unaware of Mila?s meeting with Macaulay.

?Ashton would be devastated to find out that [Mila] was sneaking around behind his back,? the source said. ?He?d feel totally betrayed.?

Henry Cavill -- I'll Nail 'Superman' Role ... Even Though I'm Not American

102912_henry_caval_launch
Henry Cavill is confident ... his Britishness WILL NOT get in the way of his portrayal of Superman in the upcoming "Man of Steel" movie.

Of course, Superman is considered the greatest American superhero of all time ... sorry Batman, Iron Man, Spiderman, etc. ... and Cavill will be the first non-Yank to play the role.

So when we asked the 29-year-old if he was intimidated by the challenge, he insisted he wasn't fazed in the least.

In fact, he even said he would support an American actor playing James Bond ... as long as that person has the chops.

And if you don't care about Superman ... watch the clip anyway, 'cause Henry is really, really good looking.

Tropical storm Alex returns to kill 10

THE first major storm of the Atlantic season was entering the Gulf of Mexico today after unleashing landslides and floods that killed at least 10 people in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Overnight, Alex, which had been downgraded earlier to a tropical depression, strengthened and regained its tropical storm status.

At noon (AEST), Alex, which packed sustained winds of 75km/h, was entering the Gulf of Mexico some 100km west southwest of Campeche, Mexico, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

"Additional strengthening is forecast - and Alex could become a hurricane within the next 48 hours," the NHC said.

Although it was not due to directly hit the massive BP oil spill off the southern US state of Louisiana, the storm could still generate waves that would hamper clean-up and containment efforts.

Officials in Nicaragua told AFP the bodies of six people had been found in or around the northern city of Esteli, swept to their deaths by torrents from the swollen San Lucas river.

In eastern El Salvador, on Central America's Pacific coast, two people drowned when they were carried away by strong currents near San Miguel, while more than 500 people were evacuated to shelters from high-risk areas.

In western Guatemala, two farmers working on a road improvement project were buried and killed by a rain-triggered landslide, the national emergency agency Conred reported.

Forecasters said the storm was expected to dump a total of 10-20cm of rain over the Yucatan Peninsula, southern Mexico and Guatemala bythis afternoon.

Up to 38cm of rain were possible in mountainous areas and forecasters warned of "life-threatening flash floods and mudslides".

Central America was slammed last month by Tropical Storm Agatha, which roared ashore into Guatemala from the Pacific, unleashing heavy rains and floods that left some 275 people dead or missing.

The NHC's long-term forecast has the storm heading over the Gulf of Mexico in the direction of the US-Mexico border, but with a possibility of waves and winds generated by the storm affecting the site of the huge oil slick unleashed by the April 20 explosion of the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig.

But a forecaster at the NHC downplayed a direct hit on the oil cleanup area.

"The storm is not an issue for the spill," said NHC spokesman Dennis Feltgen.

Glitter released after 'Savile' arrest

British former pop star Gary Glitter is arrested as police investigate a child sex abuse scandal involving late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).

FORMER pop star Gary Glitter has left a London police station after his arrest by police investigating the Jimmy Savile scandal.

He was held on Sunday morning at his home in central London and taken to a police station.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Officers working on Operation Yewtree have today arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation.

"The man, from London, was arrested at approximately 7.15am on suspicion of sexual offences and has been taken into custody at a London police station.

"The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed 'Savile and others'.''

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was photographed leaving Charing Cross police station on Sunday afternoon.

Scotland Yard was not available for comment on Glitter's release. Police did not say what led to his arrest.

Police moved on Glitter at his London home early in the morning in what Scotland Yard said was ?suspicion of sexual offences? related to British entertaining icon Jimmy Savile.

The BBC and Sky News showed footage of Glitter, who wore a hat, a dark coat and sunglasses, being taken from his home by officers and driven away. Glitter was later photographed leaving Charing Cross police station on Sunday afternoon.

Scotland Yard later said Glitter was bailed to return to the police station in mid-December pending further inquiries, the Press Association reported.

UK police say 300 potential sexual abuse victims of late TV star Jimmy Savile have been identified. Picture: Getty Images

Savile died last year aged 84 but last month police launched an investigation into the BBC personality and former host of Top of the Pops after evidence he was a serial paedophile.

Police have now identified more than 300 victims of Savile and other celebrities in the UK and are pursuing 400 lines of inquiry.

Among those are child abuse in schools, at the BBC studios in London including an on-site recording bus and abuse of physical and mental children at a hospital. At least one Savile victim is an Australian man from New South Wales.

The Savile Operation Yewtree is specifically looking at up to a dozen people who were either child abusers or procured children for Savile; among those are reportedly up to nine current BBC TV and radio personalities.

Gary Glitter

Convicted paedophile Gary Glitter is alleged to have a raped a girl, 13, in Jimmy Saville's dressing room at the BBC.

Glitter, the British glam rock popstar from the 1970s, was last night being interviewed by detectives from the Savile probe.

His name, and real name Paul Gadd, is already tied to child sex after he was convicted in the UK in 1999 on child pornography and later prosecuted in Vietnam in 2006 for sex offences against minors. He was deported back to Britain in 2008.

Glitter rose to fame in the 1970s with a string of UK hits, including the crowd-pleasing hit Rock & Roll (Part 2), a mostly instrumental anthem that has been a staple at sporting events thanks to its catchy "hey" chorus, but his music has often been shunned since his abuse convictions.

It is now alleged the disgraced 68-year-old had sex with a schoolgirl in Savile's BBC dressing room in the 1970s. Glitter has denied the allegations.

There is evidence BBC management chose to ignore multiple complaints of Savile?s abuse and those of other personalities and even killed off a documentary by its own staff that last year was set to expose him as a serial paedophile.

On Sunday, the chairman of the BBC Trust said he was committed to finding out the true scale of the scandal to save the broadcaster's reputation. "Can it really be the case that no one knew what he was doing? Did some turn a blind eye to criminality? Did some prefer not to follow up their suspicions because of this criminal's popularity and place in the schedules?" Chris Patten wrote in The Mail on Sunday.

The BBC has set up an independent inquiry into the corporation's culture and practices in the years Savile worked there. It also launched a separate inquiry into whether its journalists dropped an investigation into the allegations.

Scotland Yard has confirmed Savile is the worst paedophile in British history and further arrests were expected.

The Savile matter has shocked the British public not least of all because of the other personalities linked to the abuse.

Jen's cleavage does all the talking

Jennifer Aniston

JENNIFER Aniston seems to be on a mission to divert the tabloids from her fiance and engagement ring.

Two weeks ago her nipples were the centre of attention. Now it's her plunging cleavage.

The former Friends star turned up at LACMA 2012 Art + Film Gala on Saturday with her boyfriend Justin Theroux on her arm.

The couple rarely step out in public together, so their appearance on the red carpet was a chance to get some nice shots of her ring and decode their body language.

But Aniston's cleavage had other plans. A wide neckline that almost reached Aniston's navel and no bra meant there was a lot of flesh on show.

Earlier this month, comedian Chelsea Handler shamed Aniston into covering up her nipples on live TV after making fun of the tight tops the actress wears.

"When Jen comes on the show, there's always something where her nipples are very, very pronounced. Not today, I can't see them today ... Oh, actually I can," Handler said on her late night talk show, Chelsea Lately.

Aniston, clearly embarrassed by the sudden attention her leather top was getting, replied: "Oh Jeez."

'Dear Samsung, sorry you're not as cool'

Apple Samsung

  • Apple issues back-handed apology to Samsung
  • Says Galaxy Tab doesn't copy the iPad/iPhone design
  • "Not as understated, simple or cool"

THE Apple v Samsung tech saga continues, and Apple has landed the latest blow.

Apple has issued a back-handed apology on its website for accusing Samsung of stealing their design for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, 8.9 and 7.7

Apple issued the apology in newspapers and on its website after losing an appeal in the UK High Court last week.

But within the apology, references are made to Samsung's inferior design, which are "not as cool".

"The informed user?s overall impression of each of the Samsung Galaxy Tablets is the following. From the front they belong to the family which includes the Apple design; but the Samsung products are very thin, almost insubstantial members of that family with unusual details on the back."

"They do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design. They are not as cool."

The squabbling tech giants have been in and out of court around the world.

Last month Samsung took a clever shot at Apple with an ad making fun of its device-obsessed fans before the release of the iPhone 5.

Space jump inspired Brisbane's Banksy

Fintan Magee

Watch as daredevil Felix Baumgartner plummets from the edge of space and lands safely, breaking the fastest freefall record - and the sound barrier.

  • Daredevil Felix Baumgartner is re-imagined by Brisbane street artist.
  • Brisbane abandoned building given an artistic facelift.

THE SUPERSONIC jump undertaken by the Redbull daredevil inspired something in this Brisbane street artist. But the results are not what you'd expect.

Fintan Magee is one street artist who?s not afraid to think big, really big.

The 27-year-old former graffiti artist, Brisbane's answer to UK street artist Banksy, has just completed his most recent wall mural, drawing inspiration from the recent supersonic jump from daredevil Felix Baumgartner.

In his piece, however, the Austrian appears to be doing backstroke through water, as opposed to floating through space.

The idea for the wall painting, which stretches across one of Brisbane's abandoned buildings, began as a joke. But the event inspired something in Magee and he began digging through photos of the history-making leap.

He decided, in the end, to change the context of the event to get people thinking about what the event meant to them.

Happy with the result, Magee sees it as a "light-hearted look" at the "amazing achievement".

Already an established artist Magee has traveled the world, visiting and decorating the streets of Asia and Europe, recently returning from a trip to Oslo and Copenhagen.

The fine arts graduate has completed pieces in honour of fellow Australian artist, the recently deceased Adam Cullen and sometimes takes inspiration from paintings from across the ages.

Starting out as with graffiti Magee soon outgrew lettering and "felt like larger murals were the natural progression".

Though he?s not predominately focused on any particular political agenda, Magee sees his work "as a way to get across a rough narrative", whether it is serious or humorous such as Baumgartner's supersonic jump.

Painting the walls of people's streets gives them a chance to see the works up close and encourages them to have an opinion on the art.

"It might stimulate conversation or be poked fun at. People can bring their own interpretations."
